How to get the most out of your time with blog commenting

by Sushant Risodkar · 57 comments

When I market online I like to practice simple but effective principles that I refer to as “smart marketing.”  In short, I like to optimize the most out of my time and also implement marketing methods that will give me the best return off of my very important investment of time.

So, when you comment on blogs with the follow attribute I would also recommend commenting on the most popular blogs, or in other words the blogs that are the most trafficked like techcrunch, mashable, shoemoney etc.

There are a couple of key factors that you should be searching for when commenting on blogs:

1. Alexa rank – Generally the lower this number is the more traffic the site is getting. This can be fabricated with a couple of black hat tips so I won’t tell you how to do it but would recommend showing this factor some importance.

2. Page rank – The higher the number this is the better as well. A higher page rank website will usually lead to a fresh 25 website being quickly eaten up (indexed) within the search engines.

3. Number of comments – The above two options can be fabricated a bit, but generally if a blog has a lot of comments then it will be generating a good amount of traffic and they have good community. Also, blogs that have a lot of comments are excellent for search engines because search engines LOVE content. Remember, it is their primary source of nourishment and if they do not get it then they will not be well nourished so they in return will not like the site very much! So in short, a blog with lots of comments should be getting more traffic.

4. How active – I would recommend making a list blogs within your market that contains the follow attribute anywhere which rewards the commentators and sort them out in an excel sheet by their details. This will also make checking for links easier later in the future as well. Usually, highly trafficked blogs will be updated more often so staying up to date with them is a good idea.

You can also check the Google cache of a website to see the last time that the Google bots have visited a site. The more often that the bots visit the sites is another good indicator that it is getting a decent chunk of traffic. In addition it always helps to be the first person to comment on a trafficked blog because your site will be in a better position to gather more presence.

I hope this article will benefit you a lot while commenting on blogs and will let you get a good amount of traffic and backlinks for your blog.

I routinely ignore Alexa ranking because it is a very meaningless statistic— unless you reside in India!!! (LOL)

Typhoon April 23, 2009 at 8:17 pm

Ya, Alexa is not sooo much important but having a look at it also doesn’t spoils anything.
But yes I do agree that Alexa rankings can not be believed that much because they are mostly based on If a visitor have an Alexa Toolbar installed in their computer(and then thy calculate something)…

If they have changed their algorithms in their recent website update(as I told on the blog few days back) then we might see proper rankings of websites.

Great Advice. I’m going to check in to TechCrunch, shoemoney, and mashable. It doesn’t look like these follow….is the approach to just comment and get more exposure?

Actually we should not commenting in a approach for get exposure only. Treat the exposure just a bonus. With this, you will be good commentator and the blog owner will appreciate you.

i spend my time for blog commenting. And i search for a blog which have top commentator widget. And i just comment to become listed there. Sometime, link on top commentator is do follow.

And you know what its mean. Backlink for you 😀

rky July 28, 2009 at 12:14 pm

@akira07, akira commenting for
backlink is not too good because some say dofollow comment is good
but overdo it harm you on google not pagerank wise but on ranking
factor.

akira07 July 29, 2009 at 7:46 am

@rky, But how about if i only commenting on relevant blog and my comment is relevant with the blog post. Will google still think it’s spam/linkfarm?

rky July 30, 2009 at 11:37 am

@akira07,
I am not sure on that point but i see that when you comment
on smartbloggerz you leave your blog last post on it everytime .
i think you place your link when your blog post is relevant.

Senthil Ramesh December 14, 2009 at 1:32 pm

@rky I cant get u correctly. Do u mean placing our last post on commenting is bad and can harm us?

akira07 December 14, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Blog last post? Do you mean recent/last article on my blog? LOL, it’s automatically given by commenting plug-in used on this blog.

Senthil Ramesh December 14, 2009 at 1:29 pm

@Akira07 no chance. Link farms are different. they have only links and search engines r too clever to find which are link farms and which are not

akira07 December 14, 2009 at 5:09 pm

So, commenting is safe way to get a link? I’m agree about it, but as i said on other article, the “google sandbox” things is for real. Need to learn about it deeply.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.

Senthil Ramesh December 14, 2009 at 1:27 pm

of course. in all cases over doing it can cause u harm. why not have a habit of dropping a comment of those do follow blogs daily when they release a new post. That makes ur back links increase consistentally and google can do nothing to u 🙂
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.

akira07 December 14, 2009 at 5:06 pm

Yes i’m now understand about it, it’s about google sandbox, right? I need to be careful of it. So, how much do you think a limit to be collecting link for commenting?

Deepika December 13, 2009 at 8:20 pm

rky July 28, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I am also commenting on many blog but i am not using my blog url on comment on any blog because i think using a blog url on any blog is not good so i only use my blog url on particular blog niche which i want to target.

Jenn December 14, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Really? I wonder, how come it’s no good putting your blog url while commenting?

Senthil Ramesh December 17, 2009 at 12:16 pm

You shouldn’t use blog url at all the places but to the places where the blog is related one or else your own comments can harm you if the blog is not a good one or irrelevant one.

What is the bad about using url on commenting form? Yes, i find you not using link in every of your comment, since in the past.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.

Senthil Ramesh December 17, 2009 at 12:18 pm

As stated above always use URL in relevant blogs. May be rky doesnt like to link from this ( because of different niche) and at these times we can give link to our twitter profile or facebook profile which can help us in social networking.

very good article. I just comment on blog when i like the content. I never look about the rankings.. These tips are really helpful. I will follow these in commenting hereafter.

Sure, I think rankings doesn’t matter. Its all our mindset and what we think about the article is important. Comments are a great place to express our views.

akira07 December 14, 2009 at 5:03 pm

Both making article and make a comment is an investment. For commentator, it’s already explained above. And for article creator (blog owner), it’s investment to build reputation, reader base, etc…
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.

Senthil Ramesh December 17, 2009 at 12:19 pm

But getting comments is not so easy unless ur content is appealing and thought provoking.

you are right…. If we post a good content readers automatically comment to that… So we have to try hard to post a good and effective content in blog.

That’s the ideal commentator about. You need to keep that habit. Content first, ranking is later. If you place ranking as first thing, people will look you as bad commentator because if the site is drop, you leave it.

Agredd Akira., This can again say that u must keep urselves in the shoes of blog owners when u comment.

You are right friend… If a blog provide a great content, we should not hesitate to comment there even if it has low ranking… And also we should present a valuable comment for that article.

Commenting as investment is unique idea. All we’re talking here is called as blog walking. For now, i’m commenting on some blog included this blog, but i’m not use it for marketing anything yet. Even like that, i still feel the benefit (in other mean, return of investment already reached) such friend, network, etc…

Senthil Ramesh December 17, 2009 at 12:23 pm
