What will happen to your blog in your absence?

make money online

Have you ever thought what will happen to your blog(s) if by chance you fall sick or something else happens to you? We really don’t like to think about it, but the truth is that we are not permanent creatures on earth and stuff happens.

Most of the time when somebody asks “what if something happens?” question to fellow bloggers, many of them don’t have a good plan in such situations, whereas others don’t want to even consider that there will ever be a time when they can’t blog.

You must think that if something bad happens to you;Who would alert my readers and clients? What would happen to my blog if I am no longer around? Not attractive possibilities, but certainly something to think about.

Appointing a Blog Guardian!

What I have done is that I have given my log in info to my brother and 1-2 friends from school who can add a simple post if something happens to me.

Also I have made a CD in which I am saving screenshots of Firefox Saved Passwords of many sites which is locked with a password.

So you should also make sure that there is someone who can do little bit thing in your absence. If there is no one who have knowledge about blogging then go teach him few simple things.

Sell or Pass on the Blog?

It’s not enough to have someone alert your readers that you won’t be blogging for a while, or ever again. You’re going to have to decide if you want to appoint a successor or sell your blogs. If it’s a matter of illness or injury, possibly you may just want someone trustworthy to fill in your blog in your absence.

Choose that person who feels the same way about blogging and your niche like you. Such that your readers will be exposed to the same passion.

Now, what if you’re no longer wish to blog or you (die)? What will happen to your blogs then? Will you leave them to alone? If you care about your blogs the way I do, you’ll want to either appoint a successor or sell it to places like sitepoint marketplace.

No One Wants to Think About It

Actually No one ever wants to discuss the “what if something happens” scene. Many of us would love to live forever or at least spend the remainder of our lives accident and illness free like I wish to. But that’s not the way of life. Since you are not a god there is 99% chances that something might happen bad in your life for once or many times.

It’s best to be prepared rather than being sorry, no matter how unattractive the thought is.

Do tell me if you have any interesting plan of yours for your blog in your absense.

This is a good thought. Don’t know what I would do with my blog. Guess I need to figure out something. Like you said, get someone to put a short one on there every once in a while.

That’s cool that you have a team to look after the website in your absence.

Wow, that was a very insightful article……but I’d imagine that the world would be able to carry on in my absence.

My wife already knows she can sell my web site & existing contracts for a decent price, and put the equipment on e-bay. (LOL)

Great to see that you have made the plan with your wife about selling your website and equipments which you use.

good aricle. I have actually been grooming my 10 year old son to take over for me if anything would ever happen. He knows my login and password and is able to do all the basic functions. I actually started him out on his own blog so he can learn the ropes.

We are a team of bloggers so all will not be having some sort of problem at the same time and this will help the blog to run even when one of the bloggers is absent due to some situation. Co-blogging is a nice option.

That’s also a cool thing to have 2-3 bloggers working on a same blog. That’s pretty much good way to cope up with this problem.

You right, many people don’t like to think about it. I been face with this problem 2 times already for 2 months each time. I still found a way to make a post here and there but that was it. Surprisingly my highest month in traffic was while I was offline with my blog just sitting there with no new posts. From that I learn what to do when I know I won’t be able to make a post for awhile.

Partnering with other bloggers is an option. They are in the same/similar boat too in case they die & no one can take over.

Perhaps set a purchase option

My wife knows how to get to my domain and site management Excel sheets. This almost became an issue about a year ago when I was in a serious car accident. Fortunately, I walked away from a totaled van with only bruises and scrapes but it could have been a lot worse.

If you’ve been following OpTempo, you’ve probably noticed I have posted there in about 6 weeks. I’m running an experiment on it right now while I’m planning some upgrades and working on other projects. Traffic, however, has remained at the same levels with no drop off.

1 of my blog is not updated (i’m absence to update it) for 2 month, but i think it’s no longer a problem since there is not too many reader. But i’m understand in case of blog which have a lot of traffic.

If decide to sell it, blog with big traffic usually will meet high price. For example Sly Vision . com which sold on $9000.
If you have no time, why still keep it? Just sell it, well this is just my opinion

In fact, it can’t be easy like that because i know some people already make many memories with their blog

I guess if I fell sick or something and were not able to manage my blogs I would be screwed – as I have no team or nothing, no friends of mine have any access to any of my blogs. Maybe a couple of years down the road if I become a successful blogger I will be able to hire some trustworthy employees to manage my blogs while I am on beach sipping martini’s with my laptop :)
