6 Traffic Generation Techniques You Did Not Think Of

by Sushant Risodkar on January 7, 2010 · 84 comments

Generating traffic to your blog, whether new or old, is one task most webmasters are unable to do in the right way and are still struggling in traffic generation. They often try the wrong techniques and then get disappointed by lack of results. This is one of the reasons why so many bloggers give up so quick.

However, the point is… Generating traffic to your blog is amongst the easiest task you’ll ever come across. All it takes is a bit of reading on the internet and then adding your own creativity and mixing it. And of course, do it with dedication. If you’re going to do it as a job that needs to be done and get over with, then you won’t succeed at it.

Here are those 6 Unique Ways OF Generating Traffic which you may have not think of earlier.

traffic,traffic generation,blog traffic

1. Renovate Your Blog Design

Creating a new design for your site can often give you a boost in the traffic. Not only does the change spike interest everywhere, but you can also submit your new design to a few popular CSS Showcase galleries. These galleries, being popular, send back quite a bit of return traffic that can end up turning into loyal visitors. And at the end of the day, loyal readers is exactly what we want!

2. Write An Interesting List Article

If you’re looking to get seriously targeted traffic, then be one of the first people to write a ‘Top 10′ post about anything that’s new and being talked about. You could also simply write a ‘Top 10 Blogs” post relating to the blogs in your niche. That’s something a lot of people search for, and you stand a chance of getting a lot of search engine traffic.

3. Tener un blog Traductor – Have A Blog Translator

You may have not understood above line(instead of people understanding spanish) if I wouldn’t have provided the translation. And same may be the situation with the people who may not understand your blog language. Installing a translator plugin could help you to increase the blog traffic highly.

Don’t forget the fact that English is not the only language that users on the internet speak/understand. There’s quite a few that do not understand English very well. Having a translator facility on your blog will mean you can get a more diverse range of traffic. And quite a few of them may end up being repeat visitors. Because your blog is one of the few that allows them to read posts in their own language. There’s a few free plugins available to do that. But there’s a plugin or two that are paid. They do the job much better, though.

Note: At SmartBloggerz, Translator can be found in the footer. So use it ;)

4. Create valuable content

Nothing (and I mean, NOTHING) will ever create traffic that’s more valuable then the content on your blog. What you post should not only be informative but should also be capable of sparking a discussion. Such posts often get linked to from a lot of places and that’s when your traffic starts spiking.

5. Offline Promotion

Don’t forget that the only way to generate traffic is not just online. Include your URL in every place you possibly can, offline. On your business cards(if it’s a business blog), your car, your house (YES! it may sound funny), letterheads, etc. It’s not often that you see websites (particularly blogs) being advertised offline. And when you DO see one, you tend to remember it very well. That’s the affect offline advertising has on everyone!

6. Link baiting in forums

This is one overlooked traffic generation method. Write an interesting post, and include only a quarter or half of it. And leave a backlink to the blog in that post. Let people click through to your blog to be able to read the post.

How does this help? When they click through to your blog, a good % of them will generally engage themselves in another post or two on your blog. And quite a few will eventually subscribe. That’s it. That’s what I/you want!

Conclusion

So you just read 6 unusual but effective ways to bring traffic to your blog/website. Trying these methods will substantially increase your traffic if implemented properly. Do you have any more unusual or interesting ways of traffic generation? Then please do share with us and your opinion about this article by commenting below :)

Yeah, guest blogging is also a nice method but many newbie bloggers who struggle for traffic and lack in content may not want to guest blog on other blogs. They would rather use the article written get published on their own blog.

In that case, I argue for guest interviews over blog posts. I’ve routinely interviewed bloggers with different specialties and they routinely tell me they see referrals…which is only a good thing.

Great techniques! Another great tip is to write a list post that links to other blog posts, such as “Top 40 Articles of 2009″, because it will bring in a lot of visitors from the trackbacks it puts on the blog posts you’ve linked to. It will also bring in a lot of comments because most of the writers of the blog posts would probably write a comment to thank you. :-)

By the way, on the line where it says “It’s not often that you see websites (particularly blogs) being advertised ONLINE.” I think you meant OFFLINE. ;-)

Yeah, renovating blog design could really help. Suppose you just change your design right now, so post a blog post about the change of theme and ask people about How it is looking. If you are having strong readership and design is good, then people will surely open up that blog post and will let you know their opinion.

Blog Commenting is a like a Golden Trick and every one should take benefit of it. It’s amongst the top ways ;)

Link Baits on forums is what i’m putting my time into and it is working just fine. This was a wonderful post Sushant, especially for newbies, but some tips you have listed above do not work for blogs which have extremely low traffic, you’ll need to have at least 500 to 1000 visitors a day to implement that effectively.

Raief January 8, 2010 at 8:51 am

Four additional points that you could add that bring me traffic are diggs, and bookmarks. Place some share this buttons on your blog or website, and do not be afraid to place foreign buttons. Use a translator, if you have to, and convert your title and description into the language of the site that you are placing your link on. It really helps to make that extra effort.
You have to sign up for each one, but once it is done it is almost automatic.

Another one is Directories. There are many kinds of directories Online and they should all be used. It takes some time and effort to submit to them, but just try to do a few at a time, maybe spend two hours a week.

I like forums, and “how to” site forums. They do not have to be related to your site or Niche. Just keep the comments real and informative, or ask valid questions. People like to answer questions that are important to them. And if you can supply informative answers then that is even better. It begins to establish you as an authority.

RSS feeds are also important and pinging your blog each time you post helps with traffic.

You mentioned article writing but the articles do not have to relate to your blog or website. They can be about any subject, and you can still capture long term traffic. But, of course, your site is what will ultimately keep the traffic returning. It has to have a good design and content, or all the traffic in the world will not help.

You will be surprised by the additional traffic you can receive from these tactics. I backtrack my traffic to see where they came from and what search brought them to my site. This is why I know that these additional efforts work. I also see how long they stayed on my site and which posts they read. This helps a lot in deciding what my future content will be focused on.

Thanks Raief for such a nice comment with so many tactics which I think would help a blogger reading it.

But I doubt on Directories. If you are talking about Web Directories, then most of them hardly bring some traffic except some big one’s like Dmoz, Yahoo etc. Rest are only good from seo point of view.

Reply

Biodun January 12, 2010 at 1:45 am

Yeah directories do not usually delivery traffic but if it comes its usually targeted!

“I like forums, and “how to” site forums. They do not have to be related to your site or Niche.”
I disagree on this, if you really want a return visitor or targeted traffic then marketing in related forum is important. You can not get the real traffic you want if your site is about babies stuff and you go about chasing web design or domain names forum!
.-= Link Exchange Forum´s last blog ..How do you choose the platform for your new website ? =-.

Reply

Raief January 12, 2010 at 11:26 pm

Some of the Directories that I am listed in send me traffic every week. I track my traffic daily so this is how I know. I was surprised when I discovered this, because I too thought that Directories were only for SEO. The nice thing about the Directory traffic is they are arriving due to my site description and not articles, posts, or ads, and they generally stay on my site longer than Search Engine Traffic, reading more pages and content. So, I like this traffic. Much of my direct traffic has started form the Directories.
I think that too many people do not place enough effort and time into them to make it effective.
I have read of a few others who swear by Directories for traffic. Of course it should not be relied on, but who wants to turn away good traffic.
I think that the time and effort involved is what turns most away from using Directories for anything more that some backlinks.
And about articles.
I continue to get return traffic from articles that have nothing to do with my site, simply because of the way I wrote them. There are people who like my writing style and what I have to say about many different subjects. So, again, no, your articles Do Not have to directly relate to your site or the content of your site to get traffic that will return.
Yes it is best to keep the bulk of your article writing centered around your site content, but If I feel like writing an article about a celebrity and my site is about baby shoes. I will write the article about the celebrity and trust me, I will get traffic from it and at the same time I will try to incorporate something about the content of my site within the article, but too obviously.
The thing about article writing is that you are developing your name as an author, not necessarily someone trying to sell baby shoes on one of your sites. The more that you become an established author and accepted as such, the greater authority you have, and your authority does not have to be only about baby shoes. In fact the broader your knowledge and authority, the easier it is to become accepted as an expert, or at least an opinionated person of knowledge.
And with authority comes followers and an audience. Kind of like twitter, and other social media sites.
So, do not restrict yourself to baby shoes just because your site may only be about baby shoes, by doing so you are limiting your audience and potential followers.
I even let my followers dictate what I do next, what I write about next, sometimes. I catapults my traffic when I do this and then at the bottom of the article or post I include some related affiliate links. I try not to be too pushy with the links.
