7 Twitter Tips For Beginners

by Sushant Risodkar on January 4, 2010

make money online

Twitter is nothing new. But it sure is the ‘new craze’. Everyone has a twitter account. Celebrities, bloggers, the president, you, and me. Being something different than most of the social sites out there makes most beginners get confused on how to use it. If you are ready to jump into Twitter, but don’t know how to get started then this article may help you.

So this blog post will concentrate on a few tips for the new tweeters.

1. Use Those 140 Characters Effectively

You’re limited to 140 characters in every tweet. So use them effectively. Use shorthand codes (LOL, AFK, BRB, etc). There’s nothing wrong with using them on twitter. And also do not post full URLs. Post shortened ones. Of course they automatically get shortened when posted, but while posting, they DO take up characters. So use sites like IS.GD to shorten your URLs.

2. Don’t Follow Every Jack and Jill

Those who primarily engage in twitter to market their blogs, will often be interested in increasing the number of followers they have. One of the often recommended ways of getting a good following is to follow every XYZ user in the hopes they’ll follow you back. Quite frankly… this is pointless. You’d rather have 100 followers who share your interests as opposed to 1000 followers who are not interactive and not concerned.

3. Plain English, Please

Shorthand codes are just fine. But please don’t experiment with weird stuff every time and again. It tends to tick people off. Not every tweet of yours has to be a mystery and puzzle. Plain English does the task just as good!

4. Re-Tweet… With Thanks To Original Tweeter

Sure you can copy others’ tweets. But be ethical and credit them for it. So when you decide to copy someone’s tweet, do it with a @name (where ‘name’ is their twitter username) preceding the tweet.

5. Don’t Look Blindly… Search Instead

You can also search for your friends or specific twitter users (celebs, etc). Just use search.twitter.com.

6. Share Pictures On Twitter

Bet you weren’t aware of this, were you? ;) . Using services such as twitpic.com you can upload and share pictures on your twitter account in your tweets. Sometimes, the pictures speak better than 140 characters would. Not to forget that they also add variety to your tweets every once in a while.

7. Model Successful Tweeters

Truth is, sometimes you need to look at the successful tweeters and see how they’re doing things. You don’t have to copy them in every aspect. Just look at them and how they do things. That should help you deduce where you’re probably going wrong and what you need to improve on.

Conclusion

Tweeting may seem very easy for everyone. But if you are using Twitter as a medium of marketing/promoting/making friends, then these tips as a Twitter Beginner will help you in it. Well, Are you using Twitter? If yes, did you used any stratergy while tweeting? Would you like to share any twitter tip which will help a beginner? Do so by commenting below.

Good tips for beginners, I would add a couple to it:
Don’t tweet in caps IT MEANS YOU ARE YELLING!
Don’t send auto DM’s with shortened links, it is spammy
Put a picture or avatar up on your account.
and most important, fill out your bio!

lolz :-P :-P :-P i never know using capital letters is like yelling :P

It also means important words to read while compared with other words ..but it should be not entire sentence. But using caps for important words is nice.

Typhoon January 5, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Yup, same here. We should not use Capital words on twitter..The first thing it will do that it will attract someone but on the other hand it may feel a spammy thing.

Using First Letter of every word with a Capital letter is a nice thing ;)

Very nice tips friend… Choosing right people and following them is very important… Just for number sake we should not follow each and every one. We can also use the search option in twitter. This gives current trend topics in the world… We can also make list.

Great tips – Twitter is decent – not bad not good – I have found better ways to market online than Twitter. I would recommend interacting on Twitter on a daily basis if possible. Build relationships etc… Just do not go on there and just make posts on your blog, or website. Be unique mix it up!

Perfect overview for the beginner tweeter! I like that you mentioned that people should ‘@’ people if you are retweeting. I like it when people do that for me, because it gives me a chance to thank them

Great tips, Sushant, one tip I would like to give to all Twitter beginners is that don’t put an affiliate link in your direct message to people, especially the “thank you for the follow” ones because it pisses people off (including me) and it can make you get unfollowed by people and it also hurts your credibility and image.

While agreeing with the bandwagon of prior commentators, I must divert and remind everyone there are lists like this for Twitter etiquette, but these are guidelines, not rules.

If someone wants to tweet in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS or retweet links without attributing the source, so be it. Learn by listening. Everyone doesn’t tweet the same and I have a problem with advice that everyone should tweet the same. Be responsible, be courteous, be open to change, and be yourself.

It is the normal concept that we should following as many people as we can for a shortcut. The thing is, it never works. We should follow only relevant twitters and same applies to our followers.

You got all truth about twitter. Marketing your tweets to people that follow you because of some extra website gaining followers is really pointless. I do not have as many followers yet but I really see quality difference when someone retweet my tweets (sometimes 10 000 followers gives me just a few click and from someone with 1000 followers I get 50-100 clicks). Quality does matter!
