A Quick Guide To Getting WordPress and Installing WP Themes

by Sushant Risodkar · 10 comments

If you love blogging very much but not using the best blogging platform for it i.e WordPress then I must say that your online success is in big loss.

But if you have decided to use WordPress as your blogging platform, then that’s great. If you have already selected a domain name service provider, have picked your WordPress host and the type of hosting plan that suits you best, the next step is to go to WordPress.org and download WordPress. After that you need to install WordPress on your WordPress host, if it isn’t already preinstalled for you.

How to Install WordPress

WordPress is very easy to install. There are several ways to do it and I recommend you the so called 5 Minute WordPress Install. Follow the instructions and you will have WordPress up and running in even less than 5 minutes. You can read the rest of the WordPress Install Guide, if you want, but if you are an IT pro or an advanced user, the 5 Minute WordPress Install is the best you can dream of.

Where to Get WordPress Themes?

Now, when you have WordPress installed on your WordPress host, the next step is to change its appearance. You can do this with the help of WordPress themes. Since WordPress is a very popular blogging platform, the good news is that there are tons of great WordPress themes and many of them are free.
You can search with Google for “WordPress Themes” and you will find many sites that offer such themes. As you can expect, one of the best places where you can find WordPress themes is WordPress.org itself.

The Themes section of WordPress.org contains thousands of themes and it is more or less certain that there you will find a theme you really like. Well, it might take you lots of time to browse all the themes but if you use the search functionality of WordPress.org, you can easily narrow down the number of suitable themes. Pick 5 or 6 themes you like and get ready to install them.

How to Install a WordPress Theme

Installing a WordPress theme isn’t difficult. Most often everything goes smoothly and you can install a new WordPress theme in a few steps but if the theme you are trying to install is damaged, or simply for another version of WordPress, it is possible to experience difficulties or even the install can fail completely.

Let’s hope that this will not happen to you but if it does, maybe it is better to simply choose another WordPress theme than to waste time in attempts to fix what is broken. Anyway, since generally installing a WordPress theme is a piece of cake, here is what you need to do:

1. Log into the admin interface of your WordPress installation and from the menu on the left choose Appearance. This will open the “Manage Themes” page shown in the below screenshot:

managing wordpress themes

2. The Manage Themes page shows the themes you have currently installed and the current theme. From this page you can activate, preview, and delete your themes, provided that they are not the current theme. If you want to add a new theme, you can either select “Install Theme” at the top right corner, or from the menu on the left click “Add New Themes”. In either case you will open the Install Themes page as shown in the screenshot below:

3. If you have your theme stored locally on your hard drive, you can upload it. If not, you can use the “Featured Filter” form and search for suitable WordPress themes. Since I presume that you have already chosen your WordPress theme and have it on your hard drive, click the Upload link (squared in red in the above image) to open the Upload form, which is shown in the next screenshot:

4. Click the Browse button, navigate to the location where your theme is, and select it. Click the Install Now button and the WordPress theme will be installed. If everything goes as planned, you will see something similar to the message in the screenshot below:

5. Now you can preview the theme (by clicking the Preview button), or directly activate it (by clicking the Activate button) and go to your site to see how the theme looks live.

You may want to check if all the widgets you have in use are displayed properly because if the theme you have just installed doesn’t have place for all of them, they will not be displayed.

This is all it takes to install a WordPress theme on your WordPress host! Easy and straightforward!

Awesome beginner guide, although i don’t know if I’d say “big loss” without WP.

While I wouldn’t advise the freebies like blogspot, there are quite a few other good platforms. 😉

But I feel that wordpress is the best platform with so many options, themes, plugins and development happening around it.

One can also try “Data Life” platform..It is considered as one of the best seo platform..you might have seen blogs in the search results while searching for downloads like software downloads..Most of blogs ranked are using data life..it has some tricky stuff which makes it rank for any keyword.

This is probably the best and easiest to follow guide about installing Wordpress. A few years ago I attempted to do this but gave up because I didn’t quite “get it”.
