StumbleUpon is one of the most efficient ways to drive traffic and get maximum referral visits. With just a few Thumbs-up you can get hundreds of visitors, but most Bloggers fail to get those first thumbs-ups to their sites or blog.
It is still a great source of traffic and links. It’s simply an incredible viral means to drive a large amount of sustainable traffic to any website over a period of time. Using it is crucial to your social marketing success.
Here Are 5 Tips To Make A Blog Post Go Viral In StumbleUpon:
1. Don’t Stumble Your Own Content
You’ll need to sign up and stumble other member’s websites in return for other members thumbing and tagging your website/blog. If you only stumble your own content, then other users won’t feel you add any value to the StumbleUpon community aside from self-promotion.
2. Be An Active Stumbler
Don’t just submit your articles. Be active and stumble. Get out there and vote on other people’s sites as well. You need to recommend sites to your friends, you need to make friends, and provide well written reviews of relevant sites. Active users command more traffic and they’re more likely to take an action because they’re stumbling actively anyway. Don’t just add a friend then forget about them. The power of StumbleUpon grows the more you network.
3. Be Consistent And Invest Your Time In Your Network Building
Take some time to get to know other members of the StumbleUpon community and befriend them. Your StumbleUpon presence will grow as you network with more users. Start doing all these steps mentioned here every day and you will soon find yourself in a network of people that are interested in the content of your blog, and that are active StumbleUpon users as they have recently submitted/reviewed/thumbed some relevant articles to your content.
4. Onsite Exposure
Include a Stumble Upon button on your webpage or blog post and encourage your users to use it. Like smartbloggerz has done here (in the bottom of every post). Don’t forget to link to your stumbleupon profile, in your about me page and your homepage.
Greet box or Referrer Detector, are great plugins to greet your StumbleUpon visitors with a welcome message and asking them to rate your post and subscribe to your feed or you can do it manually.
5. StumbleUpon Advertising campaign
StumbleUponAds allows you to submit a page on your blog to be shown to StumbleUpon users as they go Stumbling. The cost is 5 cents per impression, so for as little as $5 you can have 100 StumbleUpon users looking your page. If you place your campaign in a popular category and set your number of views to be high, you can rapidly expose your blog to a very new & large audience.
Traffic Is Long-Term!
Every blogger know that traffic generated via StumbleUpon is long-term. StumbleUpon is different from a search engine, which offers very targeted/unique traffic that matches keyword searches with the content on your blog.
PS. If you’re not investing your time in StumbleUpon community, then also your blog will get high traffic but it will not stay for more than 30secs..

I agree wholeheartedly that one of the key things you have to do to be successful with Stumble Upon or any social networking/bookmarking site is to be active and social with the other members.
Otherwise it’s just a token act that won’t get you anywhere.
Yes I agree with your points. Though sometimes it’s difficult to not stumble your content. Especially if your blog is new like mine.
I discovered Stumble Upon quite some time ago, but it was two months ago when I decided to really try it out. Unfortunately my results were close to zero and I left the site. Reading the above article was definitely worth the time, since I was able to find new and useful information. Now I might actually give the site another chance. It seems that being active is the most important thing if one wants to succeed.
Really great and well outlined post,
I absolutely agree with all your points and they should be followed on all social networking/bookmarking sites.
Thanks a lot for the great post,
-Onibalusi
Nice article, I try to stumble everything I enjoy reading, but I often forget to just randomly stumble. I admit the StumbleUpon toolbar for Firefox makes it really easy to stumble others sites with just a thumbs up.
These are great tips. I definitely need to get more active in the StumbleUpon Community. It’s just irritating when I want to stumble something, but there’s no StumbleUpon button on the site. You definitely have to make it easier for people to stumble your work.
i really had worst experience when i stumbled my own content. it is not a professional way because people think we are promoting something
nice make
Great post Devesh! I agree with you with the second and third point. You need to be an active stumblers if you want to increase your site traffic. Currently I’ve received 595 stumblers from my article “Lessons That Helped Me To Turn My Blog Into A Money Making Machine” by using this strategy. Have a nice day
I think the key is your second point. Taking the time to invest in others will have it’s rewards, especially on a site like StumbleUpon.
Btw, cool SU graphic!
wow, nice tips, everytime i think why i not getting good traffic frm SU, now i know why,
one doubt if i didnt vote for my current post, who will be posting mine !! – it like if i didint get any users to submit, 0 votes, but i f stubmle and i ll get 200-300 views. so how to get more traffic if no one submitting my post, should i ask them to vote, or they can find my post when i update in my blog.
- i think you help me in this matter !! and add me as a mutual friend – /animhut
I started to get a lot of traffic recently and went through logs to pin point the source. StumbleUpon and Digg had both been pinged with an article relating to ‘sites with funny names’. My site was on that list and I can personally attest to a large volume of SU traffic (and some Digg traffic) all generated from a relatively pointless article that got several thumbs up and had a list of 20 sites. Mine was no where near the funniest name on the list but there were still a lot of people checking out the domain.
Networking with the community on stumbleupon is key for making your posts to viral from what I found out. When someone with great influence stumbles your post, their friends jump on and stumble it as well – this shoots your post up up up!
Of all the popular social media/bookmarking sites, stumbleupon is really one of my top picks. Though it’s really hard to establish relationships with stumbleupon, especially if you can’t spend time with just one media site. But thanks for sharing this great tips Devesh. This just made me think that perhaps I can spare 20-30mins of my time daily just to build my stumbleupon’s rep
All of these are very useful for me. I used to use StumbleUpon as a tool to self promote. Maybe I will need to invest more time for building networking.
Thanks.
I’m always forgetting to Stumble randomly via the Chrome plugin, but I do try to stumble blog posts that I enjoy reading
I agree with you, Dev. Just like all forms of social media you have to give back so that you would get back from the society
.
Great points
.
Hey Dev,
Good post. I didn’t know that Stumble had these properties and we had to follow these rules.
Social Networking Sites are also a greay way to get your site indexed quicker.
You are basically saying to the search engines ‘Hey I have done something, come and have a look at this!’.
Kindest,
Nabeel
P.S.Typo in article:
“Start doing all theses (these) steps mention (mentioned) here every day”
Thanks..Corrected it.
great*
I was one of those people who thought just stumbling my own websites would bring in a flood of visitors. But, I didn’t really receive a whole lot of traffic. I realize that you need to participate in teh Stumbleupon Community. Great Tips!
1. Don’t Stumble Your Own Content – you meant don’t stumble ONLY your own content, right?
It’s perfectly acceptable as long as you have plenty of others with it, isn’t it?
Hey Dennis,
Yeah, that’s exactly right bro.
.
“Don’t Stumble Your Own Content” I said this because, many people just start stumbling there own content and never look out of it
Thanks for the commenting Dennis. I really appreciate it.
Nice post mate… I really had some problems with stumble. People seems to be getting a lot of traffic from it… but still i wasn’t able to find how! I think this will help me to find it
Thanks for sharing this Dev. I am an active member of SU but since this was a good thing do that you also gain good result in you, then I should start stumbling right now.
All great tips. I like StumbleUpon, it is a certainly a great place for discovering new websites. I totally agree with what you are saying about the StumbleUpon Advertising, it can be a great return on investment when leveraged properly.
Regards,
Karl
Nice tips DEV…
Really SU is best way to drive traffic than twitter and facebook
whether we have to give many keywords for a POST ??
One thing is very true that SU has quality traffic as compared to any other social networking traffic. Building network and stumbling the stuff is basic rule for a network. After subscribing to other stumblers, also check mark “Accept sharing to my toolbar” for sharing through SU toolbar.
Nice post Devesh.
Getting Traffic from Stumble Upon has always been like Mt. Everest for me, But after reading this post I am feeling that i too can get more traffic from StumbleUpon. Thanks for the tips Dev, I am going to try it all out
Nice tips, I haven’t explored using stumbleupon too much but it’s always beneficial to add more to marketing and promotional strategies. After this I’m definitely going to go back to my stumble account and get to work! Thanks! =)
Good tips, you just made my finding simpler. Will definitely put in place point 1 and 2.
Well, this is very informative and very important post and especially for the internet marketers so that they can easily populate their web business by this way… stumble upon is a very effective and important social media and you can utilize it for the promotion purposes in a more effective manner…
This is so true and a very good article on SU. A few months ago I was used SU for my blog posts and did receive good numbers from the site, then the numbers decreased rapidly and very few return visitors. You need to find and use current events of significant social significance and be very careful not to promote just your posts.
I’d like to add in that StumbleUpon has a huge potential for those that have a very strong following – think Tribe mentality.
If you had 20 or so very passionate readers, simply ask and remind them politely to stumble your posts. This will bump up the exposure. In turn, give back by stumbling their posts as well.
Build a system of equal trade and you should soon see your posts go viral in StumbleUpon
