Writing about how to be successful online, this is a guest post by Felix Albutra who is now Blogging for Profit. Check out his blog for more great and useful information.
People who already have the skills on the field they wanted are most likely become successful. Or maybe you will become successful if you immediately figure out your potentials in your field.
What if the case is different from what you are expecting?
If you are a blogger that only have the skill to write, then you won’t become successful online. Huh! Why?
Here comes the situation. What if, you are about to launch your own product or implementing a case study, then your computer shuts down.
What if you are creating your new post and you want to add an image to your article, but don’t know how?
What if you want to tweak your blog design but you can’t? And you most likely don’t want to spend money for hiring other people doing what you want.
Those questions above are most newbie and novice bloggers are complaining. The bad thing is that, if they feel they can’t fulfill the tasks, they just gonna want to quit.

So before or upon starting a blog, you should learn at least 5 of these skills:
1. Technical Computer Skill
What I mean by this is that, the skills to troubleshoot or to fix at least minor errors in your computer. Because this thing is sometimes embarrassing, when you ask for help from a computer technician where there the only problem was a small touch of the wiring of your router. Of course, you need to pay the technician’s minimum charge.
To have this skill, you don’t need to go to school to study there and wait years until you get graduated. But all you have to do is to find useful information on the internet and try to digest them that would serve you as your stock knowledge.

2. HTML Coding
Of course you want to have a cool blog template. So, you downloaded and installed one of the free templates available online. But you were surprised when you don’t meet the expected output. What should you do? Are you gonna call a friend for help?
Learning html codes is somewhat fun and easy. You may feel anxiousness upon starting to learn but don’t get discourage, because from time to time, you can connect on what those information are teaching you.
Why not start learning today? – W3schools.com
3. Image Editing
Image editing is somewhat very fun and time consuming. But this skill is really very helpful in your blogging career as you want to add some flavor to your blog post through adding related images to your blog.
The problem is that, you don’t know how. Then you should start learning now. Try this website then watch and learn. – PhotoshopStar.com
If you want to see some tutorials through live actions, you can watch those free videos on YouTube.
4. Observation Skills
Well, you love to do blog hopping and post comments on some great blogs to make connections to the host of the blog. Sometimes you feel jealous how and what these guys are doing to become successful in their career.
Now, your skills of observation take place. Try to take a closer look to those articles on blog that you frequently read. If you find nothing, try to read it again till you noticed something.
Those skills are what successful bloggers and entrepreneurs have. Feel the presence of the information. Not just reading and implementing those things that are being taught to you without thinking or observing if you can do it.
Why not copy their styles and learn what you’ve experience?
You can learn here – CopyBlogger.com
5. Psychological Skills
I entered a coaching program because the person whom I refer to the program hired me to do it for him. I was surprise that he talk about psychological aspect of internet marketing.
This topic is rear and since I blog for almost two years, I haven’t encounter someone who have shared this aspect.
Knowing what the feelings of your readers are is a great advantage of a certain online marketer. Because he can determine that his client would likely to buy the product he promoted.
Why not try to learn from this guy? – ZacJohnson.com and read his ebook.
In The End…
If you have those skills above, you can stand what it takes in your blogging journey.
But in my side, I am glad that I manage to learn those html codings, computer troubleshooting and image editing before I learn about blogging. I am still coping up the knowledge and skill of being a real internet marketer. Thanks to all my great mentors and friends who had help me all the time.
I hope this post really benefited you and if you have something you can share, please share it in the comment below.

yes online success means more of observation..great man i agree
Thanks for the visit and comment. Hope you visit more often in the future.
Good points. I have all of them, luckily. But i’m a bit weak in image editing.
I am not good at image editing but at least I can show to all people the work that I put value. Just keep it simple and unique.
I also have those skills mentioned above before I encountered blogging… I thought that those skills are very helpful for my online career.
Thanks for the comment my friend. I would love to learn more about you..

I don’t agree 100%, I must admit
I think it’s good that if you have all the skills so you can do all the stuff by yourself, but if you don’t, there’s no reason to let that discourage you from starting a blog. Instead, hire a cheap freelancer to help you get started. If it’s WordPress, then you can probably hire somebody so cheap that it’s not even worth spending your own time learning how to do it – but better to spend your time doing what you’re good at: writing.
Thanks Klaus…
As for my experience, before I acquired those skills above, it was a big challenge for me to learn those things. And it was not a hindrance for me to continue blogging because I love exploring new things….
Thanks for your comment.
Business skills are also essential. Not only do you need the power of persuasion, but you also need to know what products to promote to bring you the greatest return.
You can outsource HTML and design work, but you really need to be analytical if you ever want your blogging to become anything other than a hobby!
Hello Michelle.
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you to outsource those things that we don’t know how to do it. But if you don’t have the money to hire a freelancer, you can help yourself but learn those skills at least the basic.
What’s really awesome with getting into design work is that it later bridges to image editing, html and opens up other opportunities like logos, slogans and business cards.
If you’re chasing after a skill, find one that immediately interests you, dive right in and keep digging deeper to find other specialized skills that you can later benefit from
Great Idea Murlu. Thanks for sharing it… But rather than that, I still love blogging more than any skills that I posted above… Because I love engaging with other people.
Nice post, but I do agree that having these skills will make your life easier, but with so many outsourcing possibilities, all this can be done by others.
Most of the top Internet Marketers in the world dont know shit about coding and design, they outsource it all.
So yes it would be nice to have these skills, and I think every bloggers should know a lil bit about it all, but def not needed to be successful online.
Thanks for the comment John.
Yeah… Most successful internet marketers are now outsourcing their business through the help of freelancers. But sometimes, it is better to have these skills to apply an immediate actions to your online business or blog in case you need it right away.
On the other hand, if a blogger don’t have the money yet, they can’t afford to hire a freelancer.
You have created a nice list, but you don’t have to be a master of all those skills. As has been mentioned in previous comments, many successful bloggers do outsource some of their technical work, mainly because they are busy doing the marketing effort, and don’t want to worry about the technical aspect.
For those of us that are small bloggers, we may not have the resources to ousource our work, so definitely have some of the above skills is really handy to have.
Thanks for the point Paul.
You are right. We don’t need to be a master of all those skills above but at least, we have a background on it, so we can use those skills in times we don’t have the money to outsource.
Thanks for the comment.
These are very basic skills that every blogger should know. But the main requirement is the expertise in your subject. If you are an expert in your field or subject, you can be successful without all these basic skills too. You can hire others
Thank you very much for your comment. Your point is indeed real and true. If you are an expert on the things you do online, you would become a guru in your skills.
Like any other internet marketing gurus online, they become gurus on the skills they mastered like traffic generation, blogging, list building, designing and many others.
But at least, if you want to build a successful business online, you must aware of “making more profit than spending more money on outsourcing those things that you think you can do by yourself.
At least familiarized the basics.
Having some basic HTML knowledge is definitely not a bad thing. At least in my case I always find something that I dislike and want to change it, which requires modifying some strings of code, but overall nothing too complicated. So you don’t have to be an expert, but still being absolutely clueless is not an option as well.
These above links helps a lot as they are very important, learning some thing always helps you a lot.when ever you feel that we can learn some thing which will help in our progress then,it will always help you to get better .These always help to get the best out of it.
Having psychological skills is really important but I guess that’s where many of the bloggers fail. You came up with really nice point.I agree with you that we should always think about readers while writing articles or marketing any service or product online.
Good stuff Felix. I real a lot of lists-type articles on how to be successful at blogging, and this is the very first time someone included the psychological aspect into the mix. Nice work!
I think one area that is often overlooked in blogging and web design is the psychology of colors. It can make a huge impact on buying decisions as well as how long people stay on your site. Thanks for the interesting insight.
Thank you for sharing this nice post, Felix. It is so true that many bloggers do not like spending much of their time learning everything in their blogging venture because they can outsource most of the technical stuff, coding, image editing work, etc. I rarely encounter the aspect of psychological skills being important in an online business, so I think you have a very good point here.
yes, these skills are very small in size but all are very effective in long term. This is true that every blogger should know these little things. The resources you provided in this post are very helpful and easy to understand.
You are absolutely right, obvioursly, if you can turn on a computer, click your mouse and send emails you have enough basic knowledge to get started online, however, the more technical skills you posses to begin with the quicker you will be able to get your online business up and running.
Good post!
People don’t realize how much goes into working online. It take a lot of time and effort and it is no easy road. You really have to be dedicated and work ling hours, it doesn’t come easy.
You can’t really have all the skills that you need in order to be successful online. Actually, you just need to learn the basics for you to know the flow when you outsource the work. It can save you time and money because you’ll be getting a great result at once.
hey thanks for info.
But do you really think that for above skills people are ready to do hard work..
And also you need to make use of your basic knowledge.
Nice Post, I have all the above skills, getting to know more.
I enjoyed reading and understanding your article. For me, its a learning curve everyday. If I can learn something new everyday I figure I’ll eventually get to where I want to be.
great post.
It’s all true, why I did not realize it ..And thanks for the download link,
very useful link ..
I will add other technical skill which i think is important like Master SEO technique, bring lot of a traffic to our blog, marketing and video editing.
I agree with everything except number two. If you don’t like the template you have, you can always hire someone to do it for you. Many bloggers have done this and it doesn’t cost you that much IMHO.It won’t hurt to learn HTML, the more knowledge the better, but sometimes you need to get on with it.This is something that can be outsourced. You can’t outsource observation skills though. Good list.
I do learning computer hardware and software troubleshooting and HTML code since i was on elementary school and its help me for sure when there is a problem. The most problem frequently appear is when the layout on my blog is not like what i want, with simple HTML editing i can solve my problem. So, i’m 100% agree with this article, technical skills is a must.
thanks for this great tips….i am lack of observation skill and psychological skill . still need to learn it…
I think the best way to learn visitors psychological is to act yourself as visitors itself. Ask to yourself. What you want to see from one blog? What makes you hate/love something? Etc…something like that. With this you’ll understand your visitors.
While I do agree that everyone should have some sort of technical skills like these, what about those who truly are just not good at something (like image editing, for example)? You can’t leave out that outsourcing to someone who is better skilled at something, as that could actually benefit more than trying to do something yourself that you’re not good at.
If you look at most of the blogs online, the most successful ones usually stick to what they’re good at – providing good, solid content. I know a lot of the bigger guys who outsource all of their design work and other technical things that they otherwise wouldn’t be very good at.
I know that when you start out blogging and making a prescene on the web, you benefit if you have more skills overall, but once you get things rolling, outsourcing is the smartest thing to do. After all, time equals money
Agree, for beginning, outsourcing wasn’t good idea since we make no money yet. Oursourcing is not that cheap… But when you get stable earning already, outsourcing will save your time for sure and you can concentrate on making content.
I think even if you have this skills it will be quite hard to do create a grate blog. Also if you are new to this some advices from friends will help allot.
I love the picture above. For sure this would be the face of everyone who doesn’t have these 5 skills. In my case, I’ve learned HTML when I was 15. Learning it early is very helpful. Though I am having hard time with image editing.
