You’ve no doubt heard boring advice like “Write for people first, search engines second,” a million times, so I’ll give you some less common tips.

Here are a few of my favorite copywriting techniques and how you can fuse them with SEO techniques.

Writing Captivating Headlines – With Keywords

In copywriting, one of your major goals is to write headlines that capture attention, draw the reader in a stir an emotional reaction. With SEO copywriting, you have an added challenge: you have to try to include your keyword phrases in your headlines.

Headlines are an important factor in on-page optimization, especially the first headline at the top of the page.

If you’re willing to be creative, you can turn this challenge into a blessing. If you’ve chosen your main keyword well, you can work it into your headline in a way that will immediately grab attention (because the searcher has come to your page after typing that term into the search engine, so their eyes will be drawn to it).

Don’t waste an opportunity to use a keyword in a headline, but never sacrifice the ‘smoothness’ of a headline to try to cram in keywords that don’t fit. Focus on the reader experience.

Use Short Sentences

Short sentences are ideal for online copy. You’re trying to express straightforward ideas in a simple style. But that doesn’t mean all your sentences should be short. You want to use a variety of sentence lengths to change-up the ‘rhythm’ of your copy.

Copy where every sentence is the same length will come across choppy and awkward. A good test is to read your copy out loud – you want your copywriting to read in a conversational way, so the best method to measure that is to actually read it out as if you were having a conversation.

If it doesn’t sound conversational, it’s probably because your sentence length and structure is awkward or you’re not choosing your words well.

Use Bullet Points

Bullet points are extremely handy for keeping your copy on-topic and simple. They let you split your copy up into neat little compartments – each compartment should contain one major benefit of whatever you’re trying to sell.

Remember: something your product has is a feature. Something your product does for the customer is a benefit. That’s an important difference.

Mix Up Your Word Choice with Synonyms

We all know repeating a key phrase too many times is considered ‘spam.’ But you can actually avoid going overboard on keyword density and enhance the optimization of your web page at the same time. All you have to do is use synonyms for your main keywords.

Not only does this help you avoid being flagged for spam, it will help your page get found for all sorts of different long tail keywords.

The golden rule of SEO copywriting is to always be testing. Keep experimenting with new techniques and test new copy against your ‘control’ copy. This is how you refine your copy and increase your conversion rate over time.

How’s that blog going? Good, you say? Same here. Of course, I could use some more readers, but then again, who couldn’t, right?

If you’re a blogger – especially one that is trying to make money with your blog, there’s a good chance that you’ve spent your fair share of time trying to figure out how to lure new readers to your blog, and with varying amounts of success.

Most people tend to move toward social media sites like Facebook and Twitter when they want to increase their readership, and they are right to do so. The world of social media, if you didn’t already know, is growing by leaps and bounds every year, and with smartphones and tablets with built-in social media apps becoming as common as the rhinovirus, you can be sure that the influence social media has over the decisions people make will only grow stronger.

Then, of course, there is old reliable – email marketing. Not too long ago, email marketing was considered a passé tool for promoting and marketing. But, take a look at your inbox. Email marketing is back and in a huge way. Groupon and Living Social are two perfect examples of email marketing at it’s most successful.

So what does this mean for you, the blogger looking to hit it big?

It means that if you want to make the most of your promoting buck (an odd choice of words, I know since both social media sites and email cost little to nothing), then wouldn’t it make sense to combine the promoting power of social media and email marketing?

Of course it would. And here are a few ways to do just that.

Share-Worthy Content

This first tip is pretty simple. People are more apt to share exciting, fun content like videos or podcasts than run of the mill blog posts or price lists. Think about it this way. What are you more likely to forward to a friend, a photo ad or a funny video? If you keep your content in your emails interesting and engaging, the higher the odds of your content being shared on social media sites.

Encourage The Sharing Mood

As much as you would like them to, people don’t generally pass on promotional emails to their friends with excitement. Maybe once in a while, a blog post or coupon will be so fantastic that the person may share it with a friend or two, but that doesn’t really build your brand in any significant way.

Now – if you simply add social sharing buttons to your emails, that’s a whole different story. By adding these social sharing buttons, you’re inviting you’re readers to share your content with all of their contacts with one swift click of a button.

Start An Archive

So, you have a backlog of promotional email that you’ve sent, all of which have social sharing links attached. Now what? Do you just let these past emails dissipate into the ether until they’re forgotten? No way! Those emails still have a lot of life in them.  You just have to know how to coax it out.

Start an archive on your website of all the past emails that you’ve sent and put those emails to work. The great thing about archiving your emails is that you increase the odds of someone finding your blog via a random web search because you’ll have that many more pages on your website. More website hits means more visitors.

Develop A Sense Of Community

In the same way that there are bloggers just like you out there who want to build an audience, there are social sharing communities all over the web that are looking to help bloggers do just that. It’s a beautiful concept. A group of like-minded bloggers and business folk upload their emails and newsletters to one specific site, making them available to every member of the communities audience because it’s a shared site. Minimal work, maximum payoff.

The Mobile Solution

I mentioned mobile devices at the beginning of this article and how they seem to be everywhere these days. A great way to combine your emails with social media is to optimize your emails for viewing on mobile devices. There was a time when people only checked their email at work or at home. These days, people check their email in line at the ATM or waiting for their meal at a restaurant.

Make your emails mobile friendly, don’t forget those handy social sharing buttons, and you’re sure to see a spike in your email views.

Promote Yourself

For my last tip, I’m gonna go a bit old school. Every time you send out a new email, get on Twitter and let your followers know. Log into Facebook and plaster it on your wall. With all the work you are going to put in trying to use other people’s social networks, it’s easy to forget that you’ve got a social network as well. Don’t forget to use it.

Starting an Internet Marketing business, or any home-based business, can be intimidating.

Where do you start?

Perhaps you have already started one, but are feeling like you are in a rut.

How do you get out of it?

Whatever you do, don’t take that as a sign that you should give up on your dream. It’s normal to have these concerns.

What isn’t normal is to actually push forward and not give up. If you look at the statistics for home-based businesses, it’s not pretty, and will discourage most people. Why? Because most fail. However, that is because most people throw in the towel way too soon, sometimes due to lack of determination, or organization.

The good news is that if you are reading this, then you are probably already a step ahead of the norm and not going to get lost in the statistics. The bad news is that most people have ideas, but are at a loss in how to best implement them for optimum results. As long as you have decided to not give up, read on to get some tips on pushing forward.

Whether you are just at the beginning, or if you need to get out of a rut in the midst of your business adventure, the following information will help.

Look Around Your Work Area

Sometimes the obvious needs to be repeated, and repeated as often as it takes to stay on course. Fortunately, I learned early on the first step is to have a good plan, and to get organized. And the two had to go hand in hand for any hope at success.

I decided to try my hand at Internet Marketing back in 1999, with a little uncertainty of how it would turn out. The lack of experience I had could have easily held me back, but it didn’t. I just knew that what I was doing with a traditional job at the office wasn’t working for my family. The future was fast approaching and I needed to secure it.

I had the help of a friend, and with that, I looked into an affiliate program. Next, it became obvious to me that Internet Marketing was an avenue I wanted to take. Even with a lack of experience and not much more knowledge, I knew before doing anything else I had to organize my atmosphere…otherwise known as my home office.

To eliminate unnecessary distractions, I realized that I could not work in the midst of the household, in hopes that my family would part the way for me. That was not fair to them, and it would not be helpful for my career. I needed an area specifically set aside for my office. So, I went on the hunt for a desk, and found a variety to choose from such as a corner desk, glass top computer desks, and various others. After getting the one I wanted home, I organized the work area the best I could to diminish distractions. That was the first step in taking my new career seriously.

So, take a look around where you plan to work, or are working. Is it in the middle of your family’s activities, shared with others, or portable? If so, you should consider finding another area. Professional results, typically require a professional atmosphere.

The Key is Organization

Now is the time to find the right work space, before you start, or when you are trying to find new motivation. Finding a home office within your home isn’t always easy. You have barriers that are not typically an issue in a traditional office setting, such as space, or household traffic. However, you will find an area.

A small area is fine, but make sure you have a little leg room, as well as space for your equipment. Look all around and get creative. Think outside the box, or in the closets. I know someone who found his space in their guest room’s closet, because the items in there could be stored under the bed. He knew that the corner computer desks, which are often used in a home office, would not work for this. So, he found one that did.

The great part about having the office in the closet is that you can close the door to bring it back to a bedroom status, without disrupting your space. Other reasons it worked so well are:

• The main door in the bedroom acted as another barrier for privacy, indicating to the household that he was working.
• The space did not have to be shared, as it was out-of-the-way of other household members.
• By not taking up an entire room, it didn’t take up very much real space of the family home. This also saved in the cost of transitioning into a home office

What I recommend doing next is to find various tools, equipment, and computer programs to make your everyday tasks easier. Google Docs and Skype can definitely help with tasks such as saving keywords, communicating with others, or even sharing data and work that needs to be shared with others. Do some searching, or ask the people you know for ideas. A good part of these tools are free, or have a free trial period. The main idea is to stay organized and work efficiently.

Spring Clean Throughout the Year

The downside to the many tools that are available is that the average computer gets bogged down with unnecessary programs, leading to a sluggish system. I take a couple of times a year (more often if needed), to check out all the programs on my computer.

Using Windows, it’s easy for me to see which programs are being used, or not being used. And, the ones which are not being used, I delete them. It frees up space on my computer, and gives it a ‘tune-up’ to add to the longevity of the system. You also might find a program you forgot about and could benefit from using. I do this with my overall area as well to keep it all organized, making it easier to work in.

An uncluttered atmosphere leads to more productivity. So, if you take the time in setting up a home office, and start a business, do yourself a favor and treat it with respect. It will respect you in return.

In other words, come up with a plan, organize a work space, and then stick to it. You will see the rewards of an organized and well planned out project much quicker.

You can’t win on these blogs with a generic idea. You need to deliver top-notch articles to be considered. The guest post guidelines are usually strict for these blogs, so you need to know the topic you intend writing on.

By researching thoroughly, several aspects of that topic or niche could be unveiled to you. From this angle, you can pitch the blogger and expect a “YES” every time. Whatever niche you’re into, you can contact ‘icons’ and extract intelligent information from them. Even in the ever crowded internet marketing niche, you can still do a case study that wins the race.

Solve a problem with your guest article. We’re in the world to impact lives while earning a living. If this becomes the pivot that directs your life, you’ll definitely success online.

Unless you’re a professional freelance blogger earning good money from your blogging (which let’s be frank most of us aren’t), and the only time you can dedicate to your blog is in your free-time, then you’ll need to hone your writing skills and blog to the world without becoming a social outcast and gluing yourself to your laptop all weekend.

However, blogging on the weekends or at other times brings with it a whole host of distractions and issues that are designed to make it more difficult than ever to focus on your writing.

Let’s take a look at some of the unique challenges of blogging in your spare time;

Getting Into The Blogging Mood

While the attraction to sit on the sofa in front of the TV with your laptop is hard to resist at weekends, this half-way house between blogging and relaxing will make the quality of your writing suffer. You will be distracted by your family or flat-mates, and the urge to do housework and answer phone calls will overwhelm you.

In order to increase your productivity at weekends try to find a quiet place in the house, or (when it’s sunny) sit outside. Even going to the park can give you time outside of the house and give you the freedom to concentrate on your blog post and get your thoughts in order without any distractions.

However, whilst I’m not suggesting that you cut off all social contacts and retreat into the woods to ensure that you can blog in peace, by visiting friends and attending parties or family arrangements you are killing your blogging time.

The best way to maintain a balance (without letting either your social life or blogging suffer) is to either create a strict window in your weekend dedicated to your blog, or to set aside a particular night of the week. After all, writing in the week can also be a great way to switch off from the hassles of the workday.

Using Apps To Brainstorm Your Writing Ideas

There are some great apps out there that can help you jot down your creativity at all times, thus cutting down on the need for extensive research time at the weekend.

The best thing about apps is that they allow you to balance work and play with absolute ease and flexibility. If you’re struck by a creative bolt of lightning in the middle of the night or on the train journey home from work, then apps such as evernote allow you to keep a track of your creative thoughts and inspiration on the go.

The app allows you to store notes, create timetables, create a virtual brainstorm and even doodle. The app itself is free (for the standard version) and can really aid your weekend writing skills by allowing you to brainstorm in the week while you’re stuck traveling to work.

Maintain Writing Regularity

One of the fundamentals of blogging is the necessity to create a constant supply of content for your readers. In order to grow the reputation of your blog and acquire more readers, you must be creating fresh and unique content on a regular basis. This means that whilst the option to go travelling on the weekend with friends sounds great, if you neglect your writing because of this then you’ll find out pretty quickly that your readers will stop coming back to your blog.

Therefore, if you’ve got some big plans for the weekend then make sure to devote some more writing time beforehand and automatically set your post to be published at the usual time of publishing. This way you can enjoy your trip to the beach or the mountains without taking a guilty conscience with you.

Give Your Posts A More Personal Edge

Experiment with combining your personal life with your writings. If you’re busy moving house, or planning a holiday, or even panic buying for Christmas presents then incorporate your “crises” into your posts.

These articles allow you to present a more down-to-earth side to your writing that will enable you to really connect with your readers. Plus it cuts down the research time for your posts and you’ll have an endless wealth of content ready to flow from your latest adventure. Also, it’ll make the task of writing for your blog much more fun and make it less of a chore.

This “human” content can provoke your readers into leaving more comments and thus increase the social interaction on your blog as well. But if your blog has a reputation for quality, authoritative posts then still maintain the balance between on-topic content and off-topic content. Moreover, remember the old adage about the balance between personal and public. Whatever you write should be 100% personal but not 100% private.
