Don’t feel too bad.

I used to struggle with it as much as you did if not more.

Of course that was way before I wrote The Ultimate WordPress SEO Guide For Internet Marketers.

A few years back I spent countless of hours scavenging the internet trying to find information on SEO.

I literally found thousands of articles on ranking high in search results.

I learned everything I possibly could on the subject (talk about information overload!).

It was with time that I realized that many of the things I had learned were no longer effective or were never effective.

I spent countless of hours optimizing my keyword meta tags, creating low quality articles for my website, and for article marketing sites.

All with the hope to crack within the first page of Google.

Unfortunately for me, then I did not know about Matt Cutts, Head of Google’s Webspam team, who answers SEO related questions from viewers in a Google sponsored Youtube channel.

In his videos, Matt addresses all types of questions about SEO and has definitely debunked a lot of SEO myths that have plagued the SEO world for a long time.

If I had known what the following videos explain, I would have saved tons of time, and would have ranked higher much quicker!

Here’s the list of the top 6 SEO myths debunked by Google:

1. Domain Age:

Myth: Most SEO experts agree that the age of your domain makes a big different in your websites ranking. The older it is, the most trust worthy it is, and the higher it will rank.

Fact:  While Google does look at the age of your domain, it makes a very minimal impact in your website’s ranking.

Matt Cutts advices that the quality of content in a website and the quality of links pointing to it are far more important than the age of your domain, as always good quality content is far more important than domain age.

2. Tags Clouds:

Myth: Blogs should use meta tag clouds as much as possible for SEO boosts.

Fact:  I was guilty of this one, I had a big ugly tag cloud on my site that looked horrible.

After some time I removed it because of pure aesthetics, but as it turns out tag clouds have no positive impact on SEO at all and can actually hurt your search rankings if overused.

Really large lists of tag clouds can be confused as “keyword stuffing, especially since tag clouds are a bunch of arbitrary words mixed together.

The risk of dilating your pagerank also increases dramatically when overusing tag clouds.

3. Keyword Meta Tags

Myth: You should add Meta Keywords to all your websites pages to increase the ranking on your website.

Fact: This is something that took dozens of hours of my life when I started.

I keep reading everywhere the importance of good keywords and how adding the right keywords to your meta-tags could help you rank higher in search engines.

But in actuality Google recommends that your spend ZERO time adding keywords to your meta tags!

Google does not even look at them.

Instead you should spend your time in optimizing your title meta tag and your description meta tag since they are used heavily in search queries.

4. Frequent Updates

Myth:  To rank high in Google, you need to post frequent updates to your website.

Fact: When it comes to SEO, updating your content more regularly doesn’t give you any added benefits.

However your human users do benefit from new fresh content, and you should try to update as much as possible but only to keep your readers interested and engaged.

5. Article Marketing

Myth: Article Marketing is a great strategy for building backlinks.

Fact: This one is a tricky one.

While I have used this technique in the past and saw some positive results, it seems that this is no longer a good strategy.

Ever since the new Panda update Google has dropped the authority of many popular article marketing directories.

It seems that article marketing is no longer a good way to build backlinks to your website, especially since most article directories offer poor quality content which Google frowns upon.

Also, this technique can create duplicate content, with the same anchor links pointing back to your site; something that Matt Cutts believes will be detrimental to your SEO efforts.

It’s better to focus on creating valuable easy to read content and using social media marketing to help your content receive natural backlinks.

This links are far more beneficial for ranking high on search engines than the ones you receive from article marketing.

6. Keyword domains

Myth: To rank high your website needs to have a keyword specific domain.

Fact: This is another tricky one.

While it is not necessary to have a keyword specific domain to rank high, in search engines, you do get benefits from having them.

It all depends on what you are trying to do.

For most people having a domain that is brandable, like Twitter, Zinga, and Yahoo is a far more beneficial option.

Even though they do not contain keywords in them.

As Matt Cutts explains, Google is considering changing their algorithm to lower the weight on how much a keyword in the domain affects a search query.

If this does happen and your domains weight has less impact on the total score of your ranking then you will be left with an un-brandable domain that might not be beneficial to you at all.

Conclusion

Sometimes our impatience leads us to take shortcuts and follow the wrong advice.

Those short cuts, or plugins, or “tricks” to rank high on search engines will do nothing more than to waste your valuable time.

To rank high on search engines you first should do your due diligence in your “on-page SEO” efforts (Check out this ultimate on-site SEO guide for WordPress users).

Spend time creating truly valuable content, which your users will love, share, and link to.

Once you’ve done this, you can then start thinking about social media marketing, and guest blogging to help  you get some backlinks.

1. Provide Unique, Quality Content
   Copying content is the cardinal sin of optimization, and sites have been blacklisted for this practice. The second worst transgression is irrelevant content. Yes, a lot of people search for “porn” for instance, but if you sell shoe laces linking to or from this ever-popular term will hurt, not help your searchability. The trick is to as much as possible, treat your search engines like people. People don’t like being fooled or lied to and neither do these search engines.
2. Guest Post
   Again providing relevant and unique content, find blogs in your niche and provide content for them with a link at the end of the content. There are sites that invite this openly to bloggers in a niche, so check those out, and create relationships with bloggers so you can exchange guest posts.
3. Quality Before Quantity
   Having a lot of content still helps, but more so over time. In fact a hundred new links overnight will “scare” search engines initially, and they will look for plagiarized and spun content within. One good link with great original content on a site with authority is worth hundreds of poorly written irrelevant links. Instead get one great piece of content and share it with others.
4. Avoid Automated Services
   There has yet to be built a computer that can even come close to mimicking a human being writing stuff. This doesn’t stop many from trying though, and they will even charge you for this horrible service. Automated content offers the reader nothing of value, hurts your brand image if it is stumbled upon by a real human, and search engines hate it.
5. Get To Know Other Bloggers
   There are hundreds of millions of blogs, and chances are many of these are in your niche. Say hi, ask to guest post and allow them to do the same. These symbiotic relationships are a great boost to your searchability if the content is of high quality and unique and if each site has some authority. Comment as well as guest post if you see an article you like, always saying something useful.
6. Social Networks
   The major ones right now are Facebook and Twitter, and if you are a B2B industry LinkedIn is also a quality source. Create your page and offer good content and updates, just as you would a blog. Invite others and visit others in your niche, “liking” their content when applicable, and asking them to do the same for you. In addition, when you friend someone on a social network and they choose to “follow” you they can automatically be notified of updates to your blog, increasing the likelihood of more visits, and visits from those who actually want to read your content.

Building online presence takes time and effort, but it is very rewarding as well, when done the right way. There really is no shortcut to long-term success however, so avoid bots, irrelevant posts, automated systems and other black hat tactics and stick to the suggestions provided above.

There’s a corollary to the famous P.T. Barnum quote, “There’s a sucker born every minute,” and it is: “and when they grow up they buy +1 button votes.”

The phrase itself might not stick, but bloggers who see shiny gold in any of the numerous ads by companies selling such things should stop and say, out loud, one mind-clearing word: Panda!

What are the odds that the search-engine force that introduced that most recent of updates to its own algorithm won’t be able to detect – and downgrade – sites using such black hat gaming schemes?

No Surprises

When Google Plus and its attendant Plus 1 button were introduced nearly three months ago, masters of the obvious saw the potential for Google’s equivalent of a Like button to become a factor in search rankings.

Its own advice for webmasters certainly suggests that to be the case. The jury is still out on whether or not other social media signals, such as Tweets and Likes will be given reduced weight compared to Google’s own signal, but the question of using such information in general to affect page ranking is largely answered.

Considering Google’s enlightened self-interest, speculation about the actual necessity for blogs to include a +1 button, is likely overblown, if not irrational.

Google benefits most from producing reliable search results. To skew a user’s search experience by favoring their own social media signal over any other would work against the search engine company’s own goals. Following this line of thought, purchasing +1 hits not only doesn’t make much sense, it seems highly likely to be counterproductive.

In The Shadow Of The Panda

To paraphrase Google, a better user experience comes from high quality sites appearing above the fold in response to a reasonably intelligent search query.

Prior to the spring of this year, however, link farms, duplicated text and automated sentences chocked-full-of-keywords were frustrating both Google and its users.

Almost overnight, though, the advent of Panda downgraded, and in many cases, removed from search results, many hundreds of thousands, (at least), of poor quality links. What odds would put on the idea that those who paid out good money for link farms no longer appearing in searches, got a refund?

Content Is (insert superlative)

Panda and the ongoing variations of Google’s update represent a strong commitment to reliable content that is unique and relevant to the users.

For those focused on +1′s, retweets and Likes having some unintended effect that, by the sounds of some blogs, would directly undermine the last five months of improvement, why?Why would that make any sense?

Google considers a number of factors that indicate quality content in order to generate a comprehensive look at site quality, and therefore, site ranking. Bounce rate is one strong indicator as to whether or not a site accurately reflected the user’s intent in a search. It’s realistic to assume that a high bounce rate is a sign that the content on a search result site is, for any number of reasons, not what the searcher is seeking.

Average time on site is another factor considered, and one that presents strong evidence against the wisdom of buying Plus One votes. With so many analytics measured, compared and factored into determining content quality, +1′s, no matter how many, that don’t correspond to other analytics would, reason argues, stick out like the proverbial sore thumb, providing Google with an irresistible opportunity to downgrade or remove entirely those sites that chose a bush league SEO scheme over providing strong content.

Place Your Bets

Google’s two monumental developments, so far, in 2011, have been the introduction of its Panda upgrade and Google+.

The measure of social appeal that is the Plus 1 button incorporates itself flawlessly with the search engine company’s two major commitments.

As Google+ continues to grow in popularity, especially now that school openings have fostered initial visits by college students, and the platform itself has evolved from its beta status, +1 buttons will begin to be as common as other social networking user responses on more and more websites.

If you’re thinking about tossing some cash toward some broker selling votes, don’t approach such propositions from the perspective of how cheap the votes are, ask yourself if you could afford to lose a helluva lot more traffic through downgrade or worse?
