Let’s face it.  Starting any business is difficult, but starting a business in this economy is downright scary.  And starting an online business has its own set of particularly challenges.

You’ve got to always have your eye out for ways to improve your SERP ranking, not to mention think of new ways to drive more viewers to your site. While we all know that there is nothing like new and exciting content to get people’s attention, creating great read material is not always as easy as it sounds.

The main problem with creating content is that it typically takes about three times as much time to research and outline what you want to write about as it does to actually write it.

Of course, you have to do your due diligence if you want to write a good article, but there is a great way to make your hard earned research go further:  use it to write more than one article.

Let’s say that you have a really well researched outline for an article you wrote last month.  You can take that outline and use the information in it to write another article.  Or maybe even many other articles.  This is called repurposing the material. This works for anything you’re writing about from wooden crates to paper weights to Cuisinart 4 qt slow cookers.

No One Can Write Just One

When you choose to repurpose an article you make the conscious decision to say the same thing you said before, but in a new and unique way.  The first time I tried this; it involved an article on the horrors of modern article marketing.

I spent about three hours carefully putting together all the information I needed to convince any thinking reader that article marketing, as it is practiced today, is for the birds.  And the bird brains.

As I though more about the article, it occurred to me that it would likely mean different things to different readers.  I knew that someone just getting into internet marketing would benefit from being warned away from unsavory article marketing practices.

At the same time, someone who might have already fallen for some of these schemes would find encouragement in the article to put aside his past mistakes, correct the problems, and get his business back on track.

So I reasoned that if the article could appeal to different types of readers, I could use the information I already had to write several different types of articles.

Articles and Websites:  The Toddlers and Tiaras Version

As you have probably already noticed, article marketing is committing slow, interminable suicide by refusing to acknowledge that companies are no longer falling for the “ten different words for fish” style of article spinning.  I made this point in my first article, which was based on a 3,000 word outline I had developed.  Then it hit me:  why should this precious little article be an only child.  What he needed were siblings.

So I romanced the outline a little more and what do you know?  She gave birth to another article, a sister for my first.  Sure, the new baby was shorter than the oldest, but it doesn’t matter to a loving parent.  I was able to send both to a couple of the best websites in the industry.

That’s right.  No low ranking, everyday sites for my babies.  While one went to a PR3 site, the other made it into a PR6 ranked website.  I couldn’t be more proud.

Now, unlike human children, my little darlings quickly began to pay me back for all the care I’d given them.  They drew traffic to my website and landed me with a great SERP ranking.  They also showed off the anchor text I’d attached to each, which really got people’s attention.

More Help Comes Along

Once my two gorgeous articles were out in the world, many people found them irresistible.  They Tweeted their URLs all over cyberspace, which brought even more people to my site.  One of these folks was from ABC Affiliate.  He liked what he read so much that he interviewed me on his podcast.  Even better, that interview was picked up and rebroadcast by Geekcast.

By this time I knew I wanted a big family of articles.  However, I was busy with other tasks, so I decided to hire a couple of surrogates to bear the rest of my offspring.  These two freelance writers each produced five more articles from their relationship with my original outline.  Like their siblings, these 10 articles each had two backlinks, and were sent to only the best blog sites.  And, like their siblings, they produced amazing results for my business.  Those 24 little backlinks are still out there today, showing people the way back to my site.

So, that’s my “article marketing is bad” based family.  What will you’re topic be?  Fast food, snow boots for girls, Cuisinart food processors?  Whatever you choose, this method will work for you.

But Remember, This is Not Article Marketing

I love my articles, and think of them as children.  OK, maybe not as children, but I still respect their value and the value of the time it will take others to read them.  I truly believe that if I write something that people want to read, they’ll believe that I am selling something that they’ll want to buy. So no, this is not just more article marketing.

Nor is it SEO writing.  My articles are full grown, interesting pieces of writing. They are not puny little 450 word articles in which the same five keywords are used 80 times.  They are informative and interesting and worth a read.

Finally, this is not spinning.  I use humans to do my rewrites, not machines.  So you will not find one article that says, “The cat was cold.” Followed by another that says, ‘The feline was cool.” And another that says, “The kitty was chilly.” That’s just not my style.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

Once you’ve worked up several articles, do me a favor and show them and yourself a little respect.  Don’t send them to one of those low class content farms that promise to forward them onto hundreds of directories each day.  We both know that that’s just going to send them to the very pit of search engine hell.

Instead, do the right thing and send them so where respectable, with a PR# rating or above.  I know this takes a little more effort, but your diligence will be reward when you see your new SERP ranking.

Twitter is one of the latest social media apps out there and it’s really popular at the moment. You want to use twitter to your advantage to leverage traffic to your site; quality traffic.

Twitter is easy to use and simple.  It only takes a couple of minutes to familiarize yourself with the interface.

Quality Over Quantity

Twitter is all about quality over quantity. You want to have quality followers. 1000 quality Twitter followers will beat 10000 random Twitter followers. This is really important if you want to use Twitter for Traffic.

There are a lot of Tweeters out there that only use Twitter to spam and self promote. You don’t want that; even if they tweet out your stuff. Sure it helps, compare that to a well recognized expert endorsing your tweet. That is way better.

There are a lot of services out there who will provide you twitter followers. Sure they help a little. They might get you 20000 followers. But a person who got 2000 high quality followers will beat that. The quality followers are usually more reputable and if they retweet your message it will get you much more traffic and money. Many think Twitter is only a numbers game; more importantly they think you are popular if you have a huge following.

So make sure you have a lot of followers and then make sure you have a lot of quality followers as well.

Make An Engaging Twitter Profile

Your profile picture and your username are the first things people will see when they visit your Twitter profile page. Make your profile engaging and fill out your interests. You need to brand your personal Twitter. You also need to provide your page visitors with a reason to follow you and you need to make sure they understand you are reputable and trustworthy.

One thing that you should do is to replace your default Twitter profile page background with your brand (picture).

Don’t Spam

Spamming can be of many things. This includes over promoting your site on twitter. Not every follower is interested in your site.  Don’t tweet useless things that nobody is interested in. For emphasis – it’s all about quality.

Tweet about things you think your followers will like. Make sure it’s fun and useful for them to follow you. If you don’t provide what they are looking for they might just leave. If you find something cool on the internet then Tweet about it. If something happened to you and its related then tweet about it on Twitter. Just remember to be interesting.

Use A brand Account

Don’t use your personal Twitter account if you want to promote yourself. Rather use your sites name as a Twitter account. As I said above: not everyone is interested in your site if they follow your personal account

Add Your Site URL In Your Profile Information

This might seem obvious to people who are using Twitter to promote their site and drive traffic to it. It’s really not. I have seen countless profiles without a URL to the site. You, especially need to include it.

Be Active

You need to Tweet regularly.

What is the use of following a dead account ?

Your followers might ask the same question if they don’t see if you are active. This is also somewhat obvious if you want to market your site on Twitter; but nevertheless just as important as the other points. One way of appearing active is using 3^rd party Twitter tools. Such as a TwitterFeed and applications that allow you to manage your account more precisely and plan your Tweets.

Socialize

If you want to establish your name on Twitter then you need to make sure others see you are credible. Socialize on Twitter. Talk to the Tweeters; this is especially important for a new profile. If you help out your fellow Tweeters then they might just do the same for you.

Use 3^rd Party Twitter Applications

One such service that you should immediately set up is TwitterFeed. It allows you to set up your feed to be tweeted on Twitter. Your newest posts will then automatically be tweeted on Twitter. You could also consider purchasing MarketMeTweet which allows you to organize and plan your tweets.  This is really a great tool if you want to really make use of marketing on Twitter. It also has loads of other useful features that I won’t cover here.

Promote Your Twitter Profile

Add Twitter gadgets and widgets to your site. You need to make visitors aware of your Twitter existence. If they like your site and see your widget, chances are they might just follow you. Don’t waste such opportunities. Tell people about your Twitter account on Facebook or wherever you might be on the internet.

You need to build a large quality and targeted following on Twitter in order to effectively get traffic from Twitter. Use the tips above to help you out. Make sure you establish yourself as a credible and reputable source.

I realized that almost all the top 100 blogs (according to Technorati) have social media presence. They mainly have their profiles on Twitter, Facebook and Stumbleupon.

So today I wanted to write about marketing content on social media sites mainly Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon and Digg.

A social media campaign has an inherent viral exposure.  If you are using social media sites only as a “link building” resources, then you are limiting your potential.

Here are few changes you can make to your social media campaign that can almost double your results:

1. Content

The success secret to any social media campaign is content. First observe and analyze what kind of content people like.

Twitter: To find out what’s working with Twitter users, go to http://tweetmeme.com/. You can instantly identify the hottest stories on Twitter and can create one.

Digg: Open digg.com and go to the category you belong. You can identify the most popular stories of a category under “Top in [category name]“.

Stumbleupon: If you belong to Internet category, go to http://www.stumbleupon.com/discover/internet/ to find out the most popular stories.

Now that you have got an idea of what kind of content works, you can create one.

2. Networking

It is simple to understand that people follow people with similar interests. These people are on all kinds of social media sites including Delicious, Digg, Stumbleupon, Twitter etc.

Put these two things together.

If my interest is in driving traffic to my site but you’re trying to sell network marketing products to me, it doesn’t matter how many times you ask me, I will simply ignore your message or block you.

So, the logic is to network and share your content to people who belong to your niche.

Make 5 – 10 friends every day in Stumbleupon, Digg, Twitter and Facebook.  Start voting the stories of your friends regularly. This is very important.  Verify how many people added you as a friend. Add more and more people as friends.

Submit your content and observe how many of them will vote for your content.  If the number of votes is less than 30, then you need to add more and more friends. Because you need atleast 30 votes to reach the front page.

Also comment first on the stories you think can reach front page. This way your profile gets more exposure.

No, once you are getting 30 votes consistently for your content, start experimenting with the topics. Observe which kind of topic is getting more number of votes. Write such content in your blog and submit it in the social networking sites.

3. Sharing

Now that you’ve got great content, it is time to market it.

• Share your content to your Twitter followers using su.pr. It will also put your content across 1000′s of Stumbleupon users.
• Share your content to your digg.com friends and encourage them to “digg” the content.
• Make it easy for your Twitter followers to retweet your content.
• Share your content on your Facebook page.

4. Consistency

This is the area most people fail. People subscribe to something because they want to get regular updates. If your daily news paper starts coming only once a week, you’d probably switch to other news paper. If you fail to provide content consistently, your network will fade and your audience numbers will drop.

You also need to understand that not all niches do well in social networking sites. For example,  SEO and affiliate marketing related content do not do well in Digg. But, they do well with Stumbleupon audiences. Similarly, technology and web design related stuff do well in Delicious.

Focus on doing one of the above steps better every day and before you know it, you will be getting huge amount of visitors to your site from these sites each and every day.
