Search engines are constantly evolving and updating the ways they rank webpages according to variables like links, backlinks, keywords and phrases, on-page and off-page content, how long a site has been around, how often it is updated, physical location and much more.

The goal of search engines is not to help you, the webpage or blog owner, get ranked higher.

Their goal is to provide searchers with the most relevant information possible, first, given the keywords or phrases entered into a search. With that in mind, here are some ways to improve your search rankings:

1. Provide Unique, Quality Content
   Copying content is the cardinal sin of optimization, and sites have been blacklisted for this practice. The second worst transgression is irrelevant content. Yes, a lot of people search for “porn” for instance, but if you sell shoe laces linking to or from this ever-popular term will hurt, not help your searchability. The trick is to as much as possible, treat your search engines like people. People don’t like being fooled or lied to and neither do these search engines.
2. Guest Post
   Again providing relevant and unique content, find blogs in your niche and provide content for them with a link at the end of the content. There are sites that invite this openly to bloggers in a niche, so check those out, and create relationships with bloggers so you can exchange guest posts.
3. Quality Before Quantity
   Having a lot of content still helps, but more so over time. In fact a hundred new links overnight will “scare” search engines initially, and they will look for plagiarized and spun content within. One good link with great original content on a site with authority is worth hundreds of poorly written irrelevant links. Instead get one great piece of content and share it with others.
4. Avoid Automated Services
   There has yet to be built a computer that can even come close to mimicking a human being writing stuff. This doesn’t stop many from trying though, and they will even charge you for this horrible service. Automated content offers the reader nothing of value, hurts your brand image if it is stumbled upon by a real human, and search engines hate it.
5. Get To Know Other Bloggers
   There are hundreds of millions of blogs, and chances are many of these are in your niche. Say hi, ask to guest post and allow them to do the same. These symbiotic relationships are a great boost to your searchability if the content is of high quality and unique and if each site has some authority. Comment as well as guest post if you see an article you like, always saying something useful.
6. Social Networks
   The major ones right now are Facebook and Twitter, and if you are a B2B industry LinkedIn is also a quality source. Create your page and offer good content and updates, just as you would a blog. Invite others and visit others in your niche, “liking” their content when applicable, and asking them to do the same for you. In addition, when you friend someone on a social network and they choose to “follow” you they can automatically be notified of updates to your blog, increasing the likelihood of more visits, and visits from those who actually want to read your content.

Building online presence takes time and effort, but it is very rewarding as well, when done the right way. There really is no shortcut to long-term success however, so avoid bots, irrelevant posts, automated systems and other black hat tactics and stick to the suggestions provided above.

• Customize Pages

Landing pages are most effective when they are laser targeted to a specific keyword phrase. This is why many successful PPC marketers develop duplicate landing pages for different advertisements. The landing pages, however, are optimized for specific keywords.

In order to avoid receiving Google’s penalty for duplicate content, you can implement ‘no-index’ and ‘no-follow’ tags to prevent the Google spider from visiting these pages and maintain your high quality score.

• Get Technical

Besides creating great copy, relevant content and optimized campaigns don’t forget to think about more technical aspects. For instance, if your domain name has your keywords in it, your score may be higher. Also, be sure to create a Google sitemap and implement your Meta tags. Don’t forget your Privacy Policy and About Us sections either. Include links to other sites as well.

There are many websites out there that Google would not have any relationship with. What happens to these websites is that they won’t be found on Google search results.

It is very important that your website be listed among Google’s search results. This is because so many web users uses Google search engine to conduct most of their searches. If you want your website to be seen among the search results, you need to make your website Google’s friendly.

In a few minutes, I will be showing you guidelines on how to make your website Google Friendly. Following these guidelines will help Google find, index, and rank your site.

If you choose not to make your website Google friendly, your site will be removed entirely from the Google index or otherwise penalized. If a site is penalized, it may no longer show up in results on Google.com or on any of Google’s partner sites.

Design And Content

1. In designing your website, make sure you give a proper hierarchy of tags and text links. Every page on your website should be reachable from at least one static text link.

2. Add a sitemap on your website for your users. The sitemap must have links that point to the important parts of your website. A sitemap with extremely large number of links is not advisable. You should break the sitemap into multiple pages. (If you have a big blog, having a sitemap in .gz format is really advisable — Typhoon)

3. Use a reasonable number of links on any page of your website.

4. Ensure that your website’s content is useful and information-rich.

5. Optimize your website for search engines. This you can do by conducting a research for the words users would type on Google.com to find your pages. Once you get those keywords, always include them in your website’s content.

6. Use more text instead of more images to display important names, content, or pages on your website. The Google crawler that puts website on Google search results does not recognize text contained in images. In cases where you cannot do without using images, consider using the “Title” element or “ALT” attribute to describe what the image is all about. Make sure that they are descriptive and accurate.

7. Avoid broken links and correct all links on your website that goes nowhere. If a link is not available, do not include it on your website site. If you must include it, let your users know that it is coming soon.

8. Do not use dynamic URLs (i.e. the URL containing a “?” character). It is not every search engine spider that crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages.

According to Google, the following technical details needs to be followed in order to make your website Google friendly.

• Use a text browser such as Lynx to examine your site, because most search engine spiders see your site much as Lynx would. If fancy features such as JavaScript, cookies, session IDs, frames, DHTML, or Flash keep you from seeing all of your site in a text browser, then search engine spiders may have trouble crawling your site.

• Allow search bots to crawl your sites without session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site. These techniques are useful for tracking individual user behavior, but the access pattern of bots is entirely different. Using these techniques may result in incomplete indexing of your site, as bots may not be able to eliminate URLs that look different but actually point to the same page.

• Make sure your web server supports the If-Modified-Since HTTP header. This feature allows your web server to tell Google whether your content has changed since we last crawled your site. Supporting this feature saves you bandwidth and overhead.

• Make use of the robots.txt file on your web server. This file tells crawlers which directories can or cannot be crawled. Make sure it’s current for your site so that you don’t accidentally block the Googlebot crawler. You can test your robots.txt file to make sure you’re using it correctly with the robots.txt analysis tool available in Google Webmaster Tools.

• If your company buys a content management system, make sure that the system creates pages and links that search engines can crawl.

• Use robots.txt to prevent crawling of search results pages or other auto-generated pages that don’t add much value for users coming from search engines.

• Monitor your site’s performance and optimize load times. Google’s goal is to provide users with the most relevant results and a great user experience. Fast sites increase user satisfaction and improve the overall quality of the web (especially for those users with slow Internet connections), and we hope that as webmasters improve their sites, the overall speed of the web will improve.

Google strongly recommends that all webmasters regularly monitor site performance using Page Speed, YSlow or WebPagetest.

In addition to the above mentioned, there are quality guidelines you need to follow in order not to have your website banned from Google. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to Google listing your website on their search engine.

These quality guidelines covers the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices such as tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites. It’s not safe to assume that just because a specific deceptive technique isn’t included here, Google approves of it.

Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit.

If you believe that another site is abusing Google’s quality guidelines, please report that site. Google prefers developing scalable and automated solutions to problems, so they attempt to minimize hand-to-hand spam fighting. The spam reports they receive are used to create scalable algorithms that recognize and block future spam attempts.

• Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as “cloaking.”

• Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you’d feel comfortable explaining what you’ve done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, “Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn’t exist?”

• Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

• Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate Google’s Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

In conclusion, do all that you can to make your website Google friendly. Google’s terms are the only thing you need to rank high on Google’s search engine. On April 9th, 2010 , Google finally declared that Website Speed really matters and they have now included this as one of the 200 signals which affects your rankings on Google.

The new algorithm is called as “Site Speed” which reflects how much time does a website takes to respond to a web request. If you have faster and relevant website then better are the chances of getting top rankings.

Google, in its post states that:

Speeding up websites is important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users. Faster sites create happy users and we’ve seen in our internal studies that when a site responds slowly, visitors spend less time there.

I completely agree to this point made by Google that Site Speed makes the user experience better. In past, we also read a guest article – “Faster Web Sites For Happier Visitors And Better Conversion Rates” in which the author told us why speed of a website matters and he contributed some tips in short which can be taken in order to speed up the website. If you haven’t read it then you must go and read that out.

Earlier, I didn’t used to bother much about my blog speed but as the blog traffic grew; the need of resources started growing up and the blog loading time was something like 20-25 seconds that time. Then I took some steps to optimize my blog speed and brought the loading time to 5-10 seconds which is considered good and it has really improved the overall experience of my blog visitors.

If you are having slow site speed then don’t get disappointed as Google have also stated that this signal doesn’t carries much weight right now as much the relevance of a page matters. But still that doesn’t means that you don’t need to optimize the speed of your website.

I strongly suggest you to optimize your website site speed in order to improve your visitors experience. If that is better then hopefully you will earn better profits with your website.
