Have You Read Your Old Posts Lately? Do it Now!

This is a guest post by Tushar Agarwal from BloggersPassion.

I need to ask you a question before I further move on with this post. When was the last time you read your post that you wrote a month back?

99% will come up with “NO I didn’t” answer to this question and this 99% included me too until a week back.

And that gave me few reasons to go through my older posts at regular intervals

What Happened Exactly A Week Ago?

I was going through one of my post updating it with Insight wordpress plugin, a plugin that interlinks your articles using specific keywords. Very causally, I glanced at the contents of the post. Therein, I found three typos in a very same page.

It was very shocking for me because I pay special attention to my grammar, spellings and word usage. But still, there were 3 errors. I corrected them and checked 5 more articles. In all, I found 7 typos in all. It was very annoying and I vowed to check my articles periodically.

What Benefits You Can Get?

1. Remove Typos

Very obviously, the major advantage and it does not take more than a minute per post. I hate typos and I can understand how my readers feel when they read my post with these silly errors. And once you have removed every error, you do not need to check them ever. It is a one time exercise and if you can check it very thoroughly at the time of posting, this can be avoided.

2. Update Information

There are many articles that contain information and figures. It is always good to update them whenever you find some changes.

For example, I was searching for a post explaining how to create Facebook Fan Page. I checked the same post which I read when I was creating fan page for my previous blog. But the Facebook has updated their page creation procedure and that old post was of no use. So, I had to Google for latest results and found a new post explaining the procedure in the new Facebook. Updating data will help you in retaining readers.

3. Analyze Yourself

No doubt, your writing capability will keep on increasing with every post. So, you can always go back to old post to see what changes you need to make in your writing style.

It’s a good way to analyze your style and find your flaws. I personally feel that I have improved a lot just by reading my old posts. It helped me decide how I could improve my posts and writing style and I work on the improvement. Self assessment is a very important activity and you could do it time to time through this exercise.

4. Interlinking Your Blog Posts

The old articles can be interlinked to new articles through the keywords of the old articles. The internal linking is a very strong factor to help you make a better blog for PageRank and SEO purposes and it also helps in reducing bounce rate.

I will recommend you reading some old posts again and again to make necessary changes to it that suits Google crawlers and your readers to make your blog a better blog. Also, I would love to hear what are your views on this?

  1. Hey Tushar,

Great article. I agree with your post.

If you go back and re read your old posts, it will give you time to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses.

I think it is a great practice to go over your older posts, and reflect over them or edit them with updated info or correct them etc.

    Kindest,
    Nabeel

  2. Good advice. I always check my post at the time of posting and correct any typos or errors, if any. I agree that sometimes, the old posts may contain the data or figures, that have changed now and need to be updated.

  3. I have changed my writing style so many times I think it would be really beneficial for me to go over my posts again, I will definitely fit this in my schedule.

    Thanks

  4. Going back and re-reading old posts and web pages is a good idea, not only for the reasons you’ve cites above, but also for checking for broken links to external websites. I just found some today, where I linked to a school district, but they had changed their url structure.

  5. Great tip Tushar. I’m going to spend some time doing this later today. I think it will help me come up with some new post ideas too!

  6. It is fun to go back just to see your writing style – my blog is a little over a month old and I can see how much I’ve changed in terms of grammar throughout the post.

  7. Can’t do that, going through old post is not that easy, i use proofread plugin instead to check for typos and grammer
