This is a guest post by Melvin Dichoso from MelvinBlog.com
This is my 5th year now in blogging and my 3rd since starting my flagship blog MelvinBlog.com.
I am very happy to say that I’m making money from blogging but even up until now I still view it as a dream-come true kind of thing.
It was just a realization a long time ago and I never really thought it’d be possible. Heck, I wasn’t even sure back then if its true or just some form of a gossip. 😉
Anyway, if you’re not making any money yet then this post is for you. If you are making money, yet this post still caters to you. Below I will be talking about the reasons why you’re not making that much money yet as a blogger although I’m not limiting it to just blogging itself.
Of course, I’d be damn confident to make controversial statements below that might piss you off but hey it’s me who’s posting this article. 😉
Here we go:

Reason 1: You don’t really view making money as a goal.
We all know that goal setting is important but most bloggers who make some money here and there just don’t see making tons of money as a goal. As a result of that, they’re very happy and contented on what they are making. This is actually not bad if that’s your GENUINE intention but for some people who are dreaming about making lots of money online and yet don’t do much action, then maybe its time to re-assess if you’re acting like its really your goal.
Reason 2: You don’t have a product or ANYTHING to begin with.
Now notice how I put anything in all caps? 😉 This is actually for people who don’t have anything to make money for in the first place. Having a product is not just a requirement, its actually the standard in making money and by this I’m not just referring an eBook or informational materials.
It’s damn important to look at a THING to sell even when just starting. Again, you can sell services, you can sell your expertise, designs, themes, softwares, even affiliate products and a whole lot more. I’m pretty sure there’s at least one there that you’re good at. 😉
Reason 3. You’re not aggressive enough.
Look at the top gurus in this niche, that’s one quality that they all have in common. You can’t just be the shy type of person when it comes on doing online marketing; you have to demand for what you want.
Now this is not to confuse with just delivering junk and asking for so much but if you know you’re providing good value and you’ve built that relationship, you have every right to demand money. That is being aggressive.
And hey this just doesn’t apply to selling your product. It can also apply to other things like selling advertising space, marketing to other people and doing traffic building.
Reason 4. You’re limiting yourself to blogging
I made good money with blogging but not a lot of people are aware that I leveraged my expertise to make money from other things. I do consulting regarding various online marketing campaigns and I’m paid handsomely on an hourly basis. I also do freelance kind of work which is just that I just let my team do for me. Aside from that, I do affiliate marketing via payperclick depending on my mood.
Do take note that those things were started because I got into blogging. It’s like blogging is always a good starting point because there’s so much to learn while at the same time, you’re building your own foundation. So my tip is once you started feeling that momentum and need to branch out to other things, don’t think about it, just do it!
Conclusion:
So there ya go! I hope you understood those four points that I mentioned that could hopefully help you towards making more money. I know some of the people reading here haven’t made any money yet but just persevere. You’ll never really know when it would start pouring down for you. I myself made like $2 for the first 6 months but that didn’t stop me.
Perhaps this is where passion comes in. If you really like what you’re doing then you could survive the initial drought of startup stages. I would be very happy to hear your opinion and criticisms regarding this. Let me know.

Besides not being aggressive enough, the number one reason is simply not doing the work required to make money. There are alot easy tasks that can be done online but some of the harder tasks that people avoid to do are the ones that really enable us all to make money online and generate that traffic. So for me, the reason is a lack of dedicated work.

Yeah thats a pretty logical reason so I agree. Money is made through doing the required work and spending a ton of effort and its not hard to spot that the people who make the most money are the ones who work a lot.
hmm, cool post. I agree with your last point a lot “You’re limiting yourself to blogging” . Most newbies thinks (because they are guided in such a way) that blogging is everything and it is the only way to earn online. But who will tell them that there is a world beyond it – Internet Marketing. Yeah, Blogging helps and is a part of the process but it is not the only part (as most of them thinks) 🙂 .
We should blame those people who conditioned us to think that way. Most of them selling guides on making money only make money through selling those info and can’t make money themselves on other things.
Nice post Melvin !! I believe that some bloggers are unable to make money online because their main motivation is ” MONEY ” . First we need to drive some traffic and write some unique & informative articles on the desired blog , then it will consistently let you make some money !!! Anyway , its an AWESOME post dude !!
you are exactly right man. you’re welcome. 🙂
Most people don’t make money blogging. It’s true.
Sure, your points are somewhat valid, but the real reason most people don’t make money blogging. They’re lazy. They think “Blogging is easy work”, but quickly learn it’s not that easy!
Yeah, it was pretty obvious that I didn’t include it anymore here in my guest article, lol. 😉
Those are some very good points, Melvin. A lot of bloggers have the dream but don’t have the drive. Like in most fields, the initial stages are hard, very hard. But that’s when you have to be the most motivated and on top of your game to do the best you can. Once initial success is found, keep going and trying for more until you feel you have truly reached your goal.
Yeah that’s pretty much the general formula I would say.
It sure ain’t easy but if you put the time and effort in and constantly try new things, tweak and hone your methods you will earn something.
Yes but we all know there isn’t any real guarantees and that alone made lots of people quit doing things even before they see results.
True, I have 7 sites and 4 of them have yet to earn me anything worth mentioning.
heheh. Its embarrassing but I have way more than that. I’m very good at doing projects that don’t make money.
Although I sold most of them and abandoned some so I can focus on the bigger ones.
My wife finally abandoned her site, it was a great site too over 2500+ visits per month but she didn’t have time to run it and I didn’t have time to take it over. I thought she should have at least tried to sell it since it was a PR2 and had an established 2500 visits per month but oh well.
Setting goals is very important for anything that you want to succeed and of course blogging it’s not an exception, in my opinion it is better to set small goals on a short time and when you accomplish them, set bigger ones this has worked pretty well for me!
short goals really work better since they are more realistic and its pretty much easier to scale.
Interesting point about being aggressive.
I am a really nice person by nature and sometimes this hinders me a bit.
I will take you aggressiveness advice to heart…;)
Great article, Melvin.
Mark
Thanks. but hey take it with a grain of salt man. 😉
Hello Melvin
What you have written is totally right.. See most people who get to know that I am a blogger, the first thing they ask is what is the need to blog, what is the purpose, what will we get if we start a blog etc etc.
I say many things about blogging but when they hear “You can probably earn money through ads and referrals” and boing! They then start a blog to just earn money.. You can’t earn money just by opening a blog for the sole purpose milking cash from your blog.. and after 3 or 4 weeks, they quit.. So, for me, the bottomline is blog and keep on blogging don’t bother about money.. If you can really create quality content for your blog, you’ll someday earn from your blog. Happy blogging.
I just cannot add enough to your statement. Thats the EXACT same situation here in philippines when I tell my friends stuff about blogging.
