This is my 5th year now in blogging and my 3rd since starting my flagship blog MelvinBlog.com.
I am very happy to say that I’m making money from blogging but even up until now I still view it as a dream-come true kind of thing.
It was just a realization a long time ago and I never really thought it’d be possible. Heck, I wasn’t even sure back then if its true or just some form of a gossip. 😉
Anyway, if you’re not making any money yet then this post is for you. If you are making money, yet this post still caters to you. Below I will be talking about the reasons why you’re not making that much money yet as a blogger although I’m not limiting it to just blogging itself.
Of course, I’d be damn confident to make controversial statements below that might piss you off but hey it’s me who’s posting this article. 😉
Here we go:

Reason 1: You don’t really view making money as a goal.
We all know that goal setting is important but most bloggers who make some money here and there just don’t see making tons of money as a goal. As a result of that, they’re very happy and contented on what they are making. This is actually not bad if that’s your GENUINE intention but for some people who are dreaming about making lots of money online and yet don’t do much action, then maybe its time to re-assess if you’re acting like its really your goal.
Reason 2: You don’t have a product or ANYTHING to begin with.
Now notice how I put anything in all caps? 😉 This is actually for people who don’t have anything to make money for in the first place. Having a product is not just a requirement, its actually the standard in making money and by this I’m not just referring an eBook or informational materials.
It’s damn important to look at a THING to sell even when just starting. Again, you can sell services, you can sell your expertise, designs, themes, softwares, even affiliate products and a whole lot more. I’m pretty sure there’s at least one there that you’re good at. 😉
Reason 3. You’re not aggressive enough.
Look at the top gurus in this niche, that’s one quality that they all have in common. You can’t just be the shy type of person when it comes on doing online marketing; you have to demand for what you want.
Now this is not to confuse with just delivering junk and asking for so much but if you know you’re providing good value and you’ve built that relationship, you have every right to demand money. That is being aggressive.
And hey this just doesn’t apply to selling your product. It can also apply to other things like selling advertising space, marketing to other people and doing traffic building.
Reason 4. You’re limiting yourself to blogging
I made good money with blogging but not a lot of people are aware that I leveraged my expertise to make money from other things. I do consulting regarding various online marketing campaigns and I’m paid handsomely on an hourly basis. I also do freelance kind of work which is just that I just let my team do for me. Aside from that, I do affiliate marketing via payperclick depending on my mood.
Do take note that those things were started because I got into blogging. It’s like blogging is always a good starting point because there’s so much to learn while at the same time, you’re building your own foundation. So my tip is once you started feeling that momentum and need to branch out to other things, don’t think about it, just do it!
Conclusion:
So there ya go! I hope you understood those four points that I mentioned that could hopefully help you towards making more money. I know some of the people reading here haven’t made any money yet but just persevere. You’ll never really know when it would start pouring down for you. I myself made like $2 for the first 6 months but that didn’t stop me.
Perhaps this is where passion comes in. If you really like what you’re doing then you could survive the initial drought of startup stages. I would be very happy to hear your opinion and criticisms regarding this. Let me know.

Good job! I think bloggers fail, because that’s just all they are “Bloggers” You really need to be an internet marketer to make money with your blog. I just recently wrote a post, and shot a video showing people how I make money online every day with my blog. Thanks man!

I would also add that blogging really is about the relationships. Sure, there are tasks to do and things to accomplish, but people stand in the center of all that. Honesty, integrity, and respect really do play a big role here. Don’t cut corners, be up front with people, and do not lie to them.
Yeah absolutely right. Building relationships is the backbone of blogging in that its hard to do anything related to monetization without having people that know and trust you already.
Hi Melvin, All of these reasons you presented here except the last one are so true to me, but I am still earning a bucks from my blog even if it is just a damn free hosted blog. Oh yeah, my earnings is not that big just enough for me to smile haha.
Actually, I am not focusing more on blogging. I am happy to venture on Internet Marketing.

There may be many reasons why you may not be making money from your blog. But firstly you need to see if your post is attracting the audience you were targeting on. If not you ought to change your strategy and concentrate on the articles which you write. Choosing a relevant and meaningful topic is the most important.
I agree. That somehow falls under researching and knowing more about your market and for me its really part of the overall goal of making money (reason 1).
But I think there needs to be more emphasis on this as you mentioned because a lot of times, bloggers are working hard on niches that ARE NOT profitable which is definitely a sad thing. Thats why I always give people advice that ‘passion projects’ aren’t always profitable because thats really the case in reality.
I think making money is a very broad topic and there might be a gazillion more reasons that aren’t listed there as some of the commenters have said. Even with that, I think it still boils down on what you really want to do. A person who wants to make money and DOESN’T want to create product of his own will not make money selling products regardless of the effort that he exerts. Its like the same as freelancers not in the mood to do freelance work.
At the end of the day, you have to always still pick something that you are capable of doing and that will make it much more feasible for you to make money. Just my opinion.

Regarding your comment, well, I agree and you’re right. I cannot make money these days as a writer because I don’t want to write so thats an example right there. 🙂
However its just the fact that most people want to make money yet they don’t want to do MOST of the things related to making money. That’s the reason I think why most people don’t make money.
These are some good pieces of advice. To add, I think a lot of people enter into blogging with making money as their sole purpose. A lot of people usually get poor results, if any at all, having this mindset. Successful bloggers (those who make good money out of it) are seen as people with passion, people who want to share that passion to others. And this is the reason why they get loyal followers. Until then, one will never be able to generate cash from their blogs.
Yea exactly. Its every successful bloggers’ story. They just write out of passion and then make money out of the process. But another important thing for their success is that once they saw the potential of blogging they quickly strategize and reevaluate things. As a result, they started making more money
I’m not really a big fan of making money online in general and making money blogging in specific because in reality, there’s less than 10% of people that do actually make money and the rest are just beind sold on the dream of making money which is sad.
However, there are plenty of opportunities to make money online like going to freelancing and making money doing work for other people. Thats how making money online becomes much easier.
You are right and to be honest I started there. I got started there and thats how I was able to get my startup income.
Regarding being sold on the dream I think you’re right but sometimes its people’s responsibility too to make sure that whatever they’re consuming is good and that they will put it into action. If it fails, then probably stop consuming materials.
Good Post! All in all, I can says its about careful planning and taking action. The being agressive part does not happen when the person does not have confidence and don’t take action. For me thats the only thing that allowed to be able to make more money.
That’s true and sometimes the initial amount of work is the hardest to begin with and this is where most people get scared.
I am not very sure about being aggressive. These days if your aggressive into selling what you have then people might be annoyed and don’t go to you anymore. For the me key of selling is to just be not salesy and provide lots of value for a lot of times and then just implicilitly sell things

What I mean with being aggressive is to start selling things. Bloggers get caught up too much with writing and that they end up not having to sell anything.
In the end its about not being afraid to sell something.

As what we talked about before being passionate may not always be a good thing. Between us and others, we’ve seen passion projects that have not materialized because of obvious reasons. My question then is, where’s the fine line in determining being profitable and being passionate on the subject at the same time. How would you go and determine it?

Well yes you’re right. I had a ton of hobby projects that did not materialize because there’s no market for those things. Regarding your question, I think the best way is just to try it. If it fails, then you just move on. 😉
