Question: How many competitors there are in the niche I prefer?
Question: Can I beat them?
Niche Analysis Tool helps you answer the questions above. For this article, I’m going to take a look at three niche analysis tools. These all have the same basic aim, and that is to save you hours of market research by providing a quick way to identify keywords that can be used to drive traffic to your site.
Market Samurai
The first of these is Market Samurai. It was one of the first tools to offer this service, and has continued to be very popular. A free trial version is available, which you need to register for, download and then install on your computer.
At first glance, there is nothing special about the tool – it even uses the Google keyword tool to do its initial research. However, its value soon becomes apparent when you analyse your first keyword.
A report is produced, showing information in an easy to read table. The information provided covers PPC (price per click) analysis, SEO analysis, and keyword analysis. The last of these even tells you what percentage of people buy products from this keyword.

Google Trends
Google Trends is the next tool. It’s free to use, and has been popular due to its association with the search engine. After all, anything coming out of Google Labs has to be good, right?
Actually, after using Market Samurai, it feels a bit limited. It is easy to use, and has the simple interface that you’d expect. On the other hand, its features don’t exactly set the world on fire. It will tell you the frequency of keywords in searches, with plenty of historical data that you can chart monthly or yearly.
The one good feature is that it breaks results down into regions and languages, but it doesn’t really offer much more than that, which is frustrating. The output (below) is partly graphical, but the page feels a bit overcrowded if you are new to it – it takes a little looking at and thinking about to interpret it correctly, which isn’t really what you want from something that you are using to save time.
Easy SEO Tracking
Finally, the Easy SEO Tracking Niche Analaysis Tool is another free offering.
Market Samurai Alternative – it has a simple web interface, into which you can put words or phrases that you want to check. The report it then generates is displayed clearly on screen, an improvement over Google, and provides information on 4 important categories
- the page rank
- the number of backlinks
- whether the keywords appear in the URL
- whether the keywords appear in the title.
![]()
If you want to dig a bit deeper into any of the sites it returns, then you can click the ‘Analyse Links’ link at the side and you’ll be given a list of all the backlinks associated with the site, together with their own Google rankings. Try it with your keywords first and see what you think.

Summary
For the niche analysis purpose I would recommend trying each of the tools above and decide what matches your requirements better.

Another great ‘poor mans’ alternative to Samurai, or at least to the competition data sets, is Aaron Wall’s SEO Tool for Firefox. it works by adding an AJAX layer directly to the search page. You can set it to display the information you want and hide the information you don’t. Once you have the data loaded in the search page, you can download it all as a .csv file to import to excel and really tweak your intel.

I use Market Samurai and it really has a ton of features. The rank tracker is awesome and they just add a domain checker that will find domain names for you that are available. Haven’t tried the others yet though.
