A great news for WordPress users. Few minutes ago Akismet 2.2.5 was released. Now you can catch the spam comments in more better way.
In this release, Akismet Included a new Server Connectivity diagnostic check, which will help you to detect problems caused by firewalls.
Akismet explains more about it as:
The new Server Connectivity diagnostic feature detects problems caused by firewall or security software on some web hosts. If a web hosting company or server administrator blocks connections to Akismet.com, the Akismet plugin will be impaired or stop working altogether. The diagnostic feature will detect this and provide information that the web host can use to update their firewall to enable Akismet.
Hope you will update to it asap. to Fight against Spam Comments more properly.
You are right typhoon i am also using Akismet on my blog and getting some comments that are totally spam and it just look like a tactics to use in promoting their spam blog.
Akismet is really helpful for wordpress users. I think I should update mine later.
Akismet is awesome. Without it i’d have to weed through hundreds of spam comments every single day. It would drive me nutty.

However, moderation or askimet is better than bad image verification plug-in. There is a site which require us to type word such ew5Gh192dd or Ui4y^tT9, don’t you think it’s so bad?
Anyway, about my opinion that no plugin 100% can prevent spam, i just wanna add my opinion that the best way to prevent spam is by moderating the comment by ownself. Maybe it will take a time but it will prevent spam for sure because you’re the one who check it.
Anyway how about moderating and using also this askimet plugin? This two combination will surely 100% make your blog have no spam

The best way to detect spam is human way 🙂 There is no automatic way of doing it. So no software or php script works there.

@Custom Essay, agree with u frd. There is need to check comments in moderation still if we got Akismet. as there are many human manual spammers paid to comment on posts .. lol

Well It would be interesting for you to know that all your comments which you made on my blog were suspected as spam by Akismet. I got it approved from the Spam box.
I think you must contact Akismet team because possibly your IP might have been blacklisted earlier.
Im familiar with this, because this is so popular ^^. However, This askimet can only totally prevent spam coming from newbies. But it cant prevent spam coming from people who knows about spam itself. Say for example. Other people might say something bad towards you like “Sucks”, if its coming from a newbie, it will be prevented by the askimet, but if it comes from someone who knows about spam, it can pass the line by misspelling the word Sucks into Sux. its plainly common sense.

It would be interesting for you to know that your 2 comments one made in Blogging Tips I learned at School and this comment were considered spam by Akismet. I brought it to approval from the Spam box.

Well, maybe the advanced hacker can post some PHP code when their make a comment which make spam is allowed. That’s why we should update with many things about spam-prevention, and now it’s time to learn akismet 2.2.6

I’m comes up with googling to search the latest akismet update and i find it’s 2.2.6 version. Is there anyone have update information for the akismet 2.2.6? I’m sure there will be not too many imporvement since spamming technique for commenting is not increased also.
