Are you struggling to make your blog readers return to your blog? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Twitter only had a retention rate of 40% when they experienced massive growth, compared to FaceBook and MySpace who accomplished 70%, according to nielsen blog post. It’s safe to say that even most popular websites like Twitter in this case, experience difficulty in getting repeated traffic.
With all the efforts it takes to attract fresh readers, once you get them to your blog, you need to keep them interested in your blog. Here are some helpful tips for encouraging your visitors to stick around and come back to see what your have to tell:
1. Attract the Right Audience
In order to get people returning, you need to attract the right people in the first place. If you’re using ad-networks to advertise your blog, you should combine this effort with direct advertising on specific niche websites. Ad networks gets you wide reach while niche content sites get you more targeted traffic.
You should look for content sites or blogs that would appeal to your target blog. If you’re stuck on where to advertise, you can buy Ad Space at a Banner Auction website. Unlike automated systems, Banner Auctions enable you to selectively handpick your ad placements and deal directly with site owners.
2. Contests
Everyone loves to win prizes, especially when the entry is free and without any conditions attached to it. Contests are a great way of promoting brand awareness and discovering more about your target market.
When running a Contest, make sure to provide something appropriate and relevant to your blog if you wish to attract the right readers. A free iPod for example for a fat loss blog would be quite unproductive and most probably a waste of your resources and efforts.If you just wish to attract as many people as possible, regardless of targeting potential people, then offer something general like cash prizes or any cool gadget.
Making your Contests regular is also a good idea to get repeated traffic. This keeps users interested and coming back to enter.
Here are some more tips for contests:
- Announce the winner on your blog and send an email to all entrants advising them of a new challenge;
- Become included on contest sites to get more contestants;
- Provide users the opportunity to send contests to a friend or to promote it any way they can;
- Give an extra entry if they perform any bonus steps;
- Limiting the number of entries is strictly not advised;
- Give a time limit for accepting entries.
3. Discounts and Freebies
Everybody loves a great bargain. Many people are searching for good discounts & freebies. You can blog upon latest discounts on various domain registrars or web hosting, if you are running a webmaster related blog.
The Key to success of this method is that you have to do it as many times as possible so that people will keep looking around your blog for latest discounts coupons and freebies.
4. Hints, Trivia, Tips, & Advice Columns
Providing regular tips on your target audience’s areas of interest is a great way of generating repeated traffic.
For example, if you are running a blog related to herbal medicine, offer regular natural healing remedy. You can also provide “thought for the day”. This will keep your viewers returning to find out more remedies or trivia every day.
Providing advice columns establishes your blog as an expert in the field. Remember, people are interested in reading questions submitted by ordinary people and seeing the guidance that has been given to him by you.
5. Start a Discussion Forum
Connecting your blog to a Discussion Forum allows users to discuss their idea and their experiences will make them appreciate your blog and feel like part of a community. Starting an Discussion Forum is very easy but it’s difficult to handle it. Make sure you take full care of both i.e your blog and it’s discussion forum otherwise it will results in bad effect on your blog.
Keep That Traffic Flowing
Implementing interactive and informative aspects to your blog will not only add fresh content, but will also attract return visits.
Sustaining repeat visitors has many benefits to your blog such as it helps to build trust, make more money blogging, build a stronger community, helps to establish yourself as an authority blogger for more success.

Oh bro, even I am looking for sponsorships. I am not in a position now to giveaway things
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..Google Introduces Real Time Search In SERP =-.
First, prize is not just a cash. You can offer another prize. But as stated on article, provide prize which relevant. But yes, as my opinion on other comment, cash prize still the best. So, let’s go to the second one…
Second, the solution is sponsorship. Well, interesting contest is the one which offer big cash prize. But, not all sponsor willing to giving big cash amount. So, don’t limit the sponsor number and don’t state minimum cash sponsor amount.
Let’s the sponsor donate, even it’s just $5 or $10, but collect it until a lot of sponsor is joining. Just say there is 10 sponsor giving @$5, so the prize collected will be $50 –> nice amount.
Hope my idea is usefull. Waiting for feedback.

I actually believed that great content and design was the key to get repeat visitors, but i was wrong, less than 10% of my visitors actually come back to my blog. I’ve given aways tons of freebies, but that just got me a spike in traffic. I am gonna follow the other points you mentioned, maybe i’ll give an adspace as a prize in a contest. Any how this was a great post Sushant, very resourceful and just what i required.
Thanks

What you believed earlier is actually true, great content really helps in getting repeated visits but I think only few people take the design part seriously to consider whether to visit a blog or not. But anyone would hardly visit a really, really bad-ugly looking blog which takes 100’s of seconds to load up and has too many scripts; even it has good content.
Thanks For Commenting.
So do you mean design is still important? Well, i’m a people who not take it as serious problem. Again, content and contest :P. Especially if there is a freebie and contest.
And for vishal, good luck for your contest plan. Publish it to us when the contest is ready to launch.

40% for Twitter? Wow I didn’t know that – makes sense I suppose as people try it out and then just don’t ‘get it’.
I find one of the best ways to keep readers is to join a community. For example I write book reviews and I am part of an amazing book blogger community that takes part in challenges and readathons and they’re a really friendly bunch!

Ya, but according to an interesting report about that Twitter retention rate is that Many people don’t use twitter directly, they rather use 3rd part applications for handling their twitter profile like twitterdeck, hootsuite etc. So due to which twitter has such low retention rate than FB.
Great post.
I think holding contests are the best way to keep your blogs readers coming back as everyone wants to win something. I also think attracting similar people who are in the same position as you can keep coming back.

Having Contest on blogs is one of the popular tactics of bloggers to get repeat visit and this method is being used from past many years. Hope, you will have a contest soon on your new blog 😉
Thanks For Commenting.
And the most question always come for that statement is : yes i’m agree, contest is great. But how if contest already ended? Will their stay on here or leave? It’s happen on many contest, who drive a lot of participant, but when contest ended, it’s silent again.
But, Please take me as exception because i’m contest hunter, if one contest is end then i will go for another contest, so i’m so busy :P. But don’t worry, i’m always read via email subscribsion.

Hi Typhoon really very great advice. One of the best for getting returning visitor is to write the quality content. If you write quality content then visitor might be bookmark and subscribe to your blog and return to your blog.
Yeah, If people love your content then they will come again and again to keep reading your articles.
Thanks For Commenting.
Yes, agree that quality contest is the first. Giving discount, freebie, or make contest is help it’s just supportive. Without great content, when contest ended, their will not come back 😛

I am not doing all the points you mentioned above, but will have a look at what I can do.
All blog owners need to ensure that traffic is always there and that they can some how create a community around their blog. Some blogs have numerous writters and the content they create brings many visitors in.
.-= George Serradinho´s last blog ..Display Twitter link in comments using TwitterLink Comments WordPress Plugin =-.
Nice tips! As for me, I am only implementing the first one you mentioned: Attract the right audience. I do this by participating in forums and visiting other blogs that has the same niche as mine.
In addition to that, I think I am also doing some number 4: Advice. Every time a visitor posted a comment on my blog that asks question or ask help from me, I see to it that I answer it as much as possible.
I was surprised that based on my statcounter, I have around, on average of 100 returning visitors daily. It’s nice to know that as a blogger, you have your constant readers visiting your site and waiting fresh content from you.
