When I downloaded a free version of WP theme, I had to go to the source code in the footer and took out their link and put in my link. If someone was to do this, I would wouldn’t get a backlink?
Is there a way around this?
These days, the theme developers perform encryption on the footer links part. So its not easy for an average webmaster to simply remove that link part as it might break the website which many of us won’t wish to happen.

I completely agree with your 2nd and 3rd methods and I’ve good experience with these methods. Most of the people do not aware of these things as you stated for Top Commentators widgets.
Article Marketing is still important but with the new twist as you shown here, otherwise is not that much useful to submit one article in many directories.
