I’ve never heard of people letting you sponsor themes. It’s a great little trick though.
John Chow’s site is very large and it would obviously be an asset to get dofollow backlinks from his blog – however I don’t really work on top commentator. I have tried it once – and the thing was that I needed to maintain commenting on quite a few blogs to hold the backlinks standing. It does work, though. Once you get it from sites with at least PR 3 you get a major boost in Google’s search engine.
