Did you know that your skill in photography can be used to make money online? The photos you have taken can be licensed and be submitted on websites that sell stock photos.
The birth of digital photography and many of its innovations have made it possible for photographers in all levels to earn extra income and increase their experience in digital photography by marketing their photos through stock photography websites. This is a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to fan their hobbies while earning from it at the same time. It is not just about buying and collecting high-end equipment but also making money and gaining exposure for their work.
Stock photos are pictures that are registered to be used by artists, ad agencies, designers and just about any individual who might be in need of unique photographs online.
Here in India, there is a good demand of stock photos. Let me give you an example. Recently, I saw an advertising campaign of MyFm 94.3 (radio station) published in the newspaper. After some days, I came to know about the fact that the image used for that advertising campaign was actually taken from an Online Stock Photos website because the company didn’t wanted to throw money for ad-shooting, hiring a model etc. and hence they opted for a smart way.
Have a look at that image:

The reality behind the above image is that it was taken by some office worker of his office pune for fun. Later on the so called photographer a.k.a office worker got an idea and sold it to the stock photo website i.e he earned money online!
Photographers usually receive a one-time fee for each photo sold. You as a photographer will remain the sole owner of your work so you earn more than once for one photo. In effect, the clients are only renting the images they have paid for in a stock photography website.
There are many subjects you can use for your photography which you can sell online. It can be anything that can be found in your house or pictures of unusual animals you have encountered in one of your travels.
The most popular subjects are varied and they include travel, beauty, nature, entertainment and many other categories you can think of. What is becoming a steady trend is that a lot of stock photographers choose to have a niche and specialize in a certain kind of subject. Photo enhancements and editing can be incorporated in your stock photography to create cutting-edge images that are popular among many independent artists online. Aside from stock images and illustrations, stock photos and stock audios can also be sold through stock photography websites.
So how do you get started as a stock photographer?

First, you must get approved by a certain stock photography website. Once you are accepted, you can start submitting your work according to their requirements. Some sites offer a flat rate for every photo while others let the photographers decide on the pricing. The payment scheme for every stock photography website is different from each other. There are sites where payment is raised once a photographer reaches a certain amount of money. These websites are the most popular among clients and photographers because of their cheap photos and attractive payment scheme for stock photographers.
Some of the popular stock photography websites are:
Before you sign up in a stock photography website, you should at least own a collection of stock photos that you can showcase to the website. The most popular websites have their own standards and only accept quality digital images. Before you apply, take a look at their featured images so you can decide if you work can compare to these. Abiding by the website’s standards will help you choose photos from your collection that you think are of high quality. This will spare you from rejection and heartache.
Final Words
Getting in is probably one of the hardest parts, but once you are approved, you can submit your work so you can start earning money. You should choose a website that you think offers the best payment structure and has a large customer base. This way, your photos have a huge potential of earning money and gaining exposure.

It can really be easy especially if photography is your passion. But for me I guess I would just keep all the photos that I have personally.

This is a good idea. However, unlike my friend who got a EON 7D camera, I can’t do this for now. But I will try to acquire a camera then try to monetize it thru what you have suggested. Thanks man!
It is really great if you can earn money from selling your digital photographs – especially if you are a passionate photographer!
Selling stock is a good idea if you really have time to take quality photos. I mean, views from your house window won’t make you a successful seller.

I think this is a great idea for earning a bit of extra money, but to make a living at it would be pretty tough. Why not share your skills by doing this? It may lead to bigger and better projects.
You can definitely make a living from photography royalties, though it won’t happen overnight. If you are able to get thousands of photos accepted to these sites, you should be able to earn thousands of dollars per month. The name of the game is optimizing each photo for keywords people will type in when they are searching for a similar photo to purchase. If you are able to spread your photos around multiple sites, you can earn a lot of money this way.
Great post.
Hi brother this is something interesting while you say about the myFM picture. I have also posted one article on my blog saying about one make money by taking photograph that is shareapic.com. But I think we can not expect high earning from such programs.

Stock photos can be very tricky. In my opinion, you are selling your copyright and work for far too little. The competition is very tough, and the more that people subit their photos….the cheaper they become…supply and demand. Stock photo sites would fail to exist if people took more value in the work that they create!
