5 Virtues of Good Blogging

This is a guest post by Karimium, a tech geek and blogger from OnlineBackupServices.co. Find out 5 key-points which worked for Karimium in attaining online success. Following these 5 things could greatly help you to improve your blogging.

With some many A-list bloggers making 6 figure sums on a monthly basis, the prospect of blogging as a career is indeed an attractive one.

I get asked on a daily basis by peers with 9-5 jobs, how I managed to succeed online. I can nail these down into 5 key points, which worked for me, which I’m willing to share with you.

1. Find Your Specialty Area

One of the main reasons for why so many blogs fail to take off is that they fail to serve the core market they initially set out to get. Visitors go to a SEO blog to read the best posts on SEO, visitors go to an android blog to read the latest and best information on android phones.

For instance, there are many general blogs out there that cover a topic loosely, such as tech, and host content ranging from gadgets, web hosting, SEO etc. The problem this “generalism” creates is that a visitor interested in gadgets may not be interested in SEO, and vice versa.

A blogger should attempt to absolutely dominate a market, by becoming the authority and having the best possible content out there. As a generalist blogger you make it difficult to attract the industry experts, or the enthusiasts who only want information on the target niche.

2. Money is great, but shouldn’t be your only motivator

Let’s face it, most of us blog because we can or we aspire to be able to make more money doing less work than a 9-5 job. Blogging is like any industry, there are A-list bloggers who can command 6 figure sums on a monthly basis, and there are bloggers who can just about replace their 9-5 income.

Regardless of that, when starting out, for the first 6 months to a year, you’re probably not going to make a significant amount of money, if at all. For many bloggers it’s an uphill struggle, and can take months of working 14 hour days, 7 days a week to build momentum.

It’s times like that; when if you’re only doing it for the money, you’re going to get disillusioned. Learn to love the process and blog because you love writing and creating great content that helps others.

3. Find your style

There are different strokes for different folks, and different audiences will appreciate different writing styles. A professional legal crowd will need more well written and professional writing style, where as a consumer gadget crowd will tend to appreciate an informal and casual writing style.

However, there are no real rules set in stone. A gadget blog can either be informal or professional, to target different audiences, but not both. Decide on the style of writing you want and be consistent with it.

4. Structure your content

Even as a blogger, sometimes I come across a blog post from a blogger or writer I trust and enjoy reading. But the entire post is just large paragraphs of text, without any bullet points or subheadings.

I can’t help but wonder what direction the post is going, or if I will enjoy it. My general rule for writing for the web is, if a point can be made using bullet points then it should. If it’s appropriate to use a subheading then it needs to have one.

Segmenting a page down, allows the reader to skim through to get an idea of the content. It may be the case that the reader is only interested in one subsection of the content, using subheadings allows the user to find that segment better.

5. Keep going and keep improving

Blogging is a never-ending process, like any art form, you get better over time, and you never stop improving. There are no special tricks or tactics, it’s all about being persistent and sticking to the basics. Writing great content, winning over subscribers, rinse and repeat, it never ends, but it sure is rewarding and a great way to make a living.

That brings us to the end of this post. How do your find this post? Great, bad? Let me know this by using the comment form below.
