The good way of getting backlinks is submitting the article through submitting services. iSnare is one of these services. They send your article to dozens of related sites, where you get the backlink.
But depending on these services is not a good thing. its always good to go with the manual things.

Directories are frequently crawled. But getting approved in directories takes so much time and makes to get rid of them.
yes one way backlink plays a important role in increasing authority of your site.but when this come from Famous site like wikipedia or other authority sites then it is more valuable then normal sites.

One way backlink is quite hard. But there is many alternative to get it, as you said is submit to free directory, second is by buy it, another alternative is blogwalking (but the link is not quality link), or you can do guest blogging in other blog.

I want to say something here with excitement. I wished to build traffic and one way links to my blog with blog commenting things and is it a coincident I can see lot of contest for top comments. And that made my inlinks to rise up. Two in one benefit for me in this. The best and easy one way back link is by do follow blog commenting, commenting at those with comment luv ( it gets link to the inner page) and the least preferrable is forum posting.
