Content vs Marketing! Which is King?

by Felix Albutra on September 5, 2009 · 109 comments

This is a guest post by Felix Albutra who is Blogging For Profit.

There many blog authors arguing which blogging method is king. Some says Content is the King and some says Marketing is the King.

For you, which is king? This post will express my opinion regarding these two successful blogging techniques.

Is Content a King?

As many other successful blogging gurus teach you, Content is the king of all methods to be successful on blogging business or internet marketing. Creating quality contents to your blog is indeed one of the best ways to drive traffic to your blog. Meaning, content is considered as the flesh of your blog while traffic is its blood. Having these two elements, would let stay alive on the blogosphere (the world of blogs).

Is having content on your blog enough to be successful in online business? There are many great articles I had read but they are not gaining much traffic. In other words, those quality articles didn’t receive good rewards from search engine to earn free traffic. In which the author end up to discouragement and abandoned their blogs because they haven’t earn money from it if they were willing to. It’s sad to say. Would you let it happen to you? I guest you won’t. What should you do?

Huh! Marketing is the King?

A blogger had already revealed his secret why marketing is the king and not the content. The first time I had read this article, I was convinced that I think he is right from the examples he had shown. But then I realized that marketing blogs without quality contents is like selling a rotten meat in the market. Who would try to revisit your blog if you don’t have the quality information which your readers need?

Content vs. Marketing

Upon balancing these two great strategies, I figured out that these two strategies must have in your blogging and internet marketing activities in order to succeed online. After creating quality content for your blog, you must apply the marketing processes you knew to gather readers or viewers all you have to do is to market that content to gather readers or viewers on it.

It’s not enough that you all have the quality contents on your blog where no one is reading or viewing on it, right? Because it only consumes your efforts and time without receiving profit reward from it.

You Decide! Which is King?

Hahaha. Great job my friend. Is this the counter blow for this article http://www.carlocab.com/i-have-a-secret-content-is-not-king/

Well i say, content is the king while marketing is the queen. Basically, content is what makes your blog market. Marketing is useless if the one you market has no value. You may get someone to look into a product but you wont make a sale if the product you’re promoting has no value. This is what we bloggers must think of. We might not give the best, we might not write the best articles but at least, we create something that has a value. This way, our marketing efforts won’t put to waste. I must say that content and marketing should go together to come up with good results.

When i came up with an article telling that “content is not king” I wonder how the author was thinking. I know i don’t have the right to question his ideas. Infact i respect it, but i can’t help but think. did he forgotten how he came to the point of his success? I’m pretty sure he won’t reach what he have right now if not because of the good content. He even got rewarded by google because of it. Well, maybe he is telling it now because he’s successful already. For me, content is king and marketing is queen. So i will vote for “both are equally important”.

More content means more keywords noticed by Google spider. It will bring valuable traffic which we can convert into cash through advertising or affiliation programs.

I feel, content is prince…content will only make us survive in the future.. ..but marketing is the king in the present days…i market a lot ….many blogs have my similar content i have word by word…they hardly get 10 to 20 pageviews…but i get more than 1500 page views with more than 300 E-mail subscribers..

But marketting a blog withoutt good content make the user to visit one or two times…it is the content which regains the visitors in the blog…..

Hello Vinoth, I respect your opinion. But like what i said, without good content, marketing will just remain as marketing. Eventually, it will only get someone to look into a product, blog, or whatever it is but if they found out that there’s nothing good in it. They will run away and you will lose lots of potential sales. Which is why Content is king and marketing is queen. They should go along together. And by the way, you mean there are other blogs with similar content with your blog and word for word? I think that’s unallowable by google? coz that is a form of duplication. I think you should report those copyright violators. :) Well, on the other hand, things happen differently. Lets just give our best. Goodluck and more power

I always believe that content could only go so far….Imagine Steven Spielberg. One of the best directors of all time, right? Imagine he’s making a new movie as powerful as Schindler’s List and as exciting as Jurassic Park.(How he pulled that off, I don’t know ^-^). But, say, since he’s already so famous, he won’t do any marketing or buzz around this new movie. So NO TRAILER, No Magazine Previews, No Interviews, No NOTHING. The movie is then announced exactly on the day of its release. Do you think that movie, created by the famous Steven Spielberg, would sell well?

NO.

Same logic could be applied to blog posts. Even famous bloggers, like Darren Rowse or John Chow, still need to market their posts (with Twitter, Digg, etc). But of course they don’t have to spend as much efforts.

Andi | Web Marketer Depot September 6, 2009 at 4:55 pm

Nah, definitely marketing is more important. You could have the best content in the world, but if you don’t market it properly, nobody gonna read or knows about it. You could argue that Titanic is not that good of a movie, but because of clever marketing (maybe good choice of actors as well), they are the best-selling movie of all time. (earning a staggering $ 1.8 billion)

Shrek 3 and Spiderman 3 both have one of the best opening weekend gross in the world. But are they good? Most people would agree both are the worst entries in their respective series. What about Oscar winning movies, like maybe Shawsank redemption or Godfather? Are they selling well? They are doing ok, but they are not making even half of what the other blockbuster movies are making.

You could apply the same scenario for blogs. You need a good marketing strategy. Content is important but not as important as many bloggers claiming them to be. I would give a ratio of 65:35 to marketing vs content.

Hello Andi, I think both is important. Lets say you are the best marketer in the world. You know how to market a product very well. But do you think you will make a sale if the one you market has no value? I think not. People now adays are pretty smart. They don’t buy just because of the promotion no matter how great it was. They look more into the value of the product. Lets not take the word “King” literally, lets take it as something that has a value. That has a worth. Something that can touch and enhance other peoples lives.

As to the examples you shared, Come on, Titanic is a good movie. Yeah, it might not be the best movie ever but it is still an interesting and a must seen movie. Which is why it clicks. As to shrek, its one of the good 3d movies ever made in the 3d scene plus it has an interesting, funny story so basically it has something that will market. I tell you, the content/product will be the one to market itself if it has a value. No more no less. :)

Both are important, but not on the same level. That’s why I give ratio of 65:35. I don’t mean creating a no-value content. I’m talking about “decent” content + great marketing is better than “great” content + “decent” marketing.

Klaus from TechPatio September 6, 2009 at 11:41 pm

I’d say both are needed. Not all good content will rank high in the search engines, so you need to do marketing for those articles to get some readers. But doing marketing to get readers without having good content to read, is not going to get the readers to come back later.

Great post, Felix . And I would add underlying both content and marketing is understanding what your customer or market wants. You could have great content and super marketing, but if you’re not delivering what your customer wants, then it’s, well, not important. In your examples above, even though the content was questionable (but the marketing was good), the message was also important to the target market – how to fix less than stellar relationship and work issues.Really a nice post. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post with us.

A web site with quality unique content people will want to link to,, that way the links will increase naturally! But if you don’t get the words of the site out through links(marketing), people wont see the site ( the world to come to your door) and wont be able to read the unique content in it and therefore won’t attract the natural links.
So one shouldn’t be left behind, if you have the good content in the first place then people will link to it , best of both worlds springs to mind! Marketing help build traffic, unique content maintains it.

On the other hand, if you are fairly popular blogger already say PR3 at least, then marketing can be lessened because your readers will market for you and Google already favoring you to some lower PR bloggers.

I would give my idea. I think it is depend upon the situation. If you are a beginner, you must do this steps.
1. Research good keywords. I mean, have large number of monthly searches with low competition.
2. Submit sitemap to google and to different directories.
3. Create quality content at least 10-20 quality post related to the keyword you promote.
4. Apply the SEO that you knew say like for example, meta tags, link building and other processes
5. Market your blog. If you money, you do ppc advertising of space ad advertisement and other marketing method you knew that you think might effective to your blog.

But you see this does not happen many times. How many open ended blogs can you write? You need to market the ripe with the not-so-ripe ones and keep your blogs diversified. You need marketing for this.So in my opinion the ratio of content:marketing is 60:40.What do you think?

The poll results are really interesting to see. I think this can really be useful for getting a new site off the ground. As you mentioned, it’s tough to promote a site that only has a few articles or posts. Eventually the two start building off each other once you have some traffic and visitors – the content brings more visitors and the marketing promotes the content.

I think they go hand-in-hand to be really successful.

You are right. Every blog needs some marketing. But if you are writing on topic, unique and mostly niche posts you will get more and more traffic from search engines. But you need to leave some links on the web so your site could be found. And if your posts are good marketing will be done by your loyal readers… So definitely content is a king (with some help of marketing…).

In order to get Search engine Traffic, it´s important to targeted the right “low competition” keywords – to target these keywords can be seen as a kind of search engine marketing – can´t it?

Also you won´t get much traffic if you don´t build any backlinks to your website – except with keywords witha very very low competition – but the most of these keywords are delivering no or very little traffic.
