There’s about 250,000+ bloggers blogging everyday on WordPress.com with each creating, on average, 1-2 posts. Some of these are bloggers, while others are successful bloggers. The successful ones are those who have a dedicated group that follows them, interacts with them, and keeps visiting them over and over.
Being a blogger is not difficult; being successful requires hard work. Countless individuals set up blogs everyday. They spend hours upon hours customizing them, and installing all sorts of gadgets and plugins. But what they lack is the determination, direction, and will. Over 90% of bloggers will generally give up their blogging hobby after just about a week or month.
If you’re someone who’s thrilled by the whole ‘blogging’ theory and would love to start and be successful, here’s a few tips that should REALLY help you improve your chances of being successful. Just remember though, there’s no barrier to entering the blogging world. But it’s dominated by a lot of very successful bloggers. So if you’re going to make a name, make sure you’re dedicated to doing it.

1. Establish a purpose
Don’t just jump into the blogging world. Ask yourself WHY you want to start blogging. Is it for personal satisfaction? Is it to make money? Is it because your friends do the same? Or were you inspired by some popular blogger? Regardless of what your choice is, make sure you have a ‘purpose’ for blogging (even if it’s pointless). When you have a purpose, you naturally tend to work towards it and everything you do is a lot more systematic and organized.
2. Create a schedule
People tend to wander off their real aim when they don’t have a schedule to guide them. A schedule sets a deadline for a particular task and can help prevent some of the laziness that most of the people have in them naturally. Grab a piece of paper, and write down the date and what you plan to do, besides that date. Look at the schedule time and again and follow it like any other official timetable. You’ll get more work done 😉
3. Establish a direction
You’ve already got your purpose of blogging. Now ask yourself what you should blog about. You could be completely random and spontaneous, but you’ll lose direction very quickly and it won’t be long before blogging gets boring. So set yourself a direction. And follow that direction strictly. Plan out sequences of content that you would like to create and get them done.
4. Be creative
Monotonous blogging is not the best thing, really. Your aim should be to create content that you enjoy reading. Put simply, if you’re going to blog about something that does not relate with your interests, then you’ll only end up creating posts that are not interesting for your visitors, either. A blog can only get as interesting as the author wants to make it. Give your blog a ‘life’. Write about stuff you enjoy. Don’t consider blogging a ‘job’. Consider it a ‘hobby’.
5. Engage your readers
Interact and engage with your readers. It helps build a dedicated following. Try organizing competitions, etc regularly. Do regular Q&A sessions on your blog. Get to know your readers personally. Refer to their blogs (if it’s interesting and if they have one) from time to time. This not only helps build a regular following, but also compels your readers into promoting your blog. Word of mouth, blogging about it, etc.
6. Be unique
I’ve seen countless individuals simply copying other successful bloggers. Being inspired by successful bloggers is one thing. Blatantly copying them will get you nowhere. Put simply, be unique. Be yourself. Let your blog be a medium that communicates your personality to your readers. They don’t want another ‘Successful Joe’. They want ‘Unique Sam’. So give them that. When you blog as yourself, you blog naturally. And you tend to produce high quality content 🙂
7. Innovate, but not too much
Bloggers think it’s cool to implement/install every new plugin that is released. To be honest, this kind of attitude will only get your blog EXTREMELY messy. You don’t want that. You want your blog to be presentable. Something that calms your visitor. If the first thing a reader/visitor sees is a whole load of useless stuff being jammed on his face, he’ll be sure to click away and never come back. You don’t want that. User-friendly, That’s the keyword. Install only the necessary plugins, or those that enhance the user experience but without the overhead of the extra mess.
Conclusion
I mentioned this earlier, and I’ll say it again. Being a blogger is easy. Being successful requires hard work. So make sure you put in that extra hard work in your blog. All it takes is effort, dedication and will to do it. That’s how the pros do it. There’s no secret to it. Only dedication. So do you have any more tips that will help a blogger be successful? Wanna share it with us? Comment using the comment form below.
all points are perfect. we should be unique from other bloggers this makes a difference. And we should be consistent in posting.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
Actually, by making post by ownself, we’re already unique since each other have different writing characteristics. Don’t let your characteristic is lose because following other blogger way to write. Just as said : Be yourself. You should be confident about it.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@akira07
yeah definitely every one their own way of writing skill. we should be unique in all the always. the way of writing, choosing title, promoting, interaction with readers, right response to them these things will make a unique difference from others.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
About promoting, i think it shouldn’t be unique. If you already know some promoting technique is effective, why need to search for another promoting technique?
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@Akira May be she would have come to say we should be innovative in promoting and think of new ways to reach people than the same old ways that people follow.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Good Akira. We can be unique by being ourselves and excelling ourselves each time.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
We should be unique and write posts with our own twist to get the most benefits!
Thats right. Thats why everyone wish to have a unique theme. Uniqueness starts from there itself.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Anyway, just to notice. Each person have it different characteristic with the other, which make them as unique. But not all characteristic is guarantee you to be success. For example, people who make article with melancholic personality characteristic…Do you think all reader love to read that kind of article? I’m sure mostly is not since we know a melancholic one will write it deeply and using many term…In this case, following other charateristic is not bad.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@Akira agreed but we can be as ourselves as possible.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..7 Questions You Should Answer Before Blogging =-.
Agreed. So may I know what have u done to be unique in blogging. If u share it that can help us.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Create your own writing style. Write in a unique and easy to understand way. You can add images to your posts and make it attractive and increase its viewers.
I’m not say that i’m already unique :P. Because actually, sometime i’m also duplicate other blogger way to be successful, and you know?..It’s failed
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Being unique really makes the difference! It gives the world our own look by which we write. We should also post consistently in our blog to get more regular and loyal readers.
.-= Saksham Talwar´s last blog ..Smashing Saturday –> 12th December 2009. =-.
Ups, just to remind all. Ok, if you are consistent, but don’t make it as reason that your content is not good quality. Be consistent, but still thinking of your content quality. It’s better if you consistently make 1 quality article per week than 7 article per week but not good quality.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Really useful Sushant, all of the points are just perfect. I myself im trying all i can to become a successful blogger.

Wow it’s so nice that this article can affecting you. Well, i’m also wanna try to make my blogging activity managed well, but what can i do? Sometime there is busy day of my college, and in other time, my sister oftenly annoying me by asking me to buy something on shop X, delivering something to mr.X, or something like that…which steal my blogging time 🙁
Should i make a schedule for night work? Because in night, i’ll free from my sister 😛
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
Everyone has a busy day Akira. Not every teens like us has blogging as the only thing. As mentioned above, creating a schedule can make u a better blogger.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Hey, i’m already know about the importance of scheduling, but what i mean is how can we stick to the schedule because we’ve busy day.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
ok ok cool. yes scheduling definitely helps u out.

really you are busy with many things it seems…busy bee…
if you feel that you get free time at night time then you can schedule blogging tat time.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
Will do your tips. Even i know it will be hard since my eyes already hard and i’m feel yawn. But if it helped me, i will do it.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Yes sometimes working long time cant be a good one. You can sleep earlier, get up earlier and do some blogging related works.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..7 Questions You Should Answer Before Blogging =-.
I like the approach that you took. Your list of seven steps to become a better, more successful blogger is very good. For example, remaining consistent is a good thing because the audience is anticipating a blog post on schedule. It is not healthy to confuse them in this way if you can avoid it. Some bloggers will start out with a bang, posting everyday or two, and then the motivation and topics run out, causing a reduction in the number of posts and a confused or unhappy audience. I always say to under-promise and over-perform!
.-= Dwayne Kilbourne´s last blog ..Embrace the Changes =-.
@Dwayne Kilbourne your saying “under-promise and over-perform!” is absolutely right. we should try to update our blog atleast thrice in a week.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
Too many people start sprinting out of the gates only to lose the motivation and stamina down the straight-away!
.-= Dwayne Kilbourne´s last blog ..Embrace the Changes =-.
That’s happen oftenly especially from newbie who didn’t aware yet that blogging is not that easy. We should educate them, that’s our task who experienced enough, even we can’t said we already success.
It’s remind me when i was newbie. Make “home business” blog with 10 article ready to be launched in one week. It’s full of spirit, but on 6th or 7th (i’m forgot the detail), i feel boring 😛
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@Dwayne Thats a goog quote (y)
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..7 Questions You Should Answer Before Blogging =-.
Yes, and newbie should see it so their will not jumping into mistake. Maybe i can copy and share it on local MMO forum?
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
So, from the first, we should state our update plan and consistence with it, right? Don’t force yourself in making tight schedule, if in the end, you feel can afford it. Your schedule also should be depend on the topic. F.e if your blog is about technology, you shold plan to make daily post, it’s different for if you make a movie review blog (where 1 post/2 days is OK).
Use PDCA Cycle to do your blog activity :
– Plan what you do
– Do what you planned
– Check if there is any mistake/something need to be maintained?
– Action again after make a correction
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@akira07
you are mentioning many principles i think… This PDCA cycle is a must that should be followed by every one to become a successful blogger.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
Yes, it’s interesting to relate the principle i know from my college to online-activity :P. From that PDCA, which step is most hard to be followed in your opinion?
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@AKira, I think the first step is hard. Once u got it planned all the others will come automatically.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
@akira07
planning and executing that is the very difficult task. once we started to succeed in these two then there will be no other tough job.
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
Oh u liked it Deepika? I liked it too. may be Akira should come with principles like this that we can use. 😀
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
@senthil ramesh
yeah me too liked it. In each there will be a principle mentioned by akira07. can we give him a title “Man Of Principles In Every Post”:D
what do you say?
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
I will do it if i find i can relate the article with principe. Anyway, i just make a comment about hell and heaven approach in order to realize the purpose and consistenly do what you planned. Just search it.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@AKira again you are showing ur a business management learner.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
And just for information that i’m also have e-business class which discuss case study of successful internet business player such amazon, double click, etc….It’s very useful to implement what we got from college in my blog.
On my e-business class, “Consistencty” point is also the most discussed things.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@akira07
its great that you are able to link you e-business class with online acitivity. And its also interesting
.-= Deepika´s last blog ..My Favourtie Posts@Which I Have Read =-.
PDCA is indeed a must! We must make a plan and act upon it accordingly!
.-= Dwayne Kilbourne´s last blog ..Embrace the Changes =-.
Of course. AKira is right on his theories too 🙂
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Maybe i should make blog with topic : “Business Theory for Blog Activity”? I’m sure i can consistence with it since i’m knowledged enough about it 😛 << haha, this "akira07" guy is so confident
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Yes, and it’s because blog is not about stuck on one point, we should always do continuous improvement and of course, again, it’s about consistency.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Check and recheck… put a plan into action and then monitor the conversation. The site should always be a work-in-progress!
.-= Dwayne Kilbourne´s last blog ..Embrace the Changes =-.
I totally agree with the number 7. You dont have to install every new thing that comes to market. Cos in the end its the content that counts.
.-= izdelava spletnih strani´s last blog ..Napredek računalniških monitorjev narekuje izgled spletnih strani =-.
Agreed Bro. But how come u know that ur not innovating much. U can just give a try for everything and get rid of it if it failed.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
The ways to do it is by placing yourself as reader point of view. If you feel the plugin/widget bring you to uncomfortably and strange look, so just delete it….
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Content is king is a quote which still become a key before doing anything 🙂
Yes, don’t install all things new, and also it’s imposibble since there is a hundred plug-in comes to market every year.
Every blogger before starting out can have a purpose (whatever that may be) but in order to become successful (though could mean a lot of things depending on a blogger’s perspective of success), they must have the motivation to consistently work for their purpose. Otherwise, the blogging journey would be pointless and efforts futile.
.-= Mathdelane @Software Critics´s last blog ..Why AVG 9.0 Free Falls Short to Please? =-.
Yes, may be most of the guys who failed has not understood this, and those who are willing to be successful at blogging must follow this and maintain the consistency at blogging.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Ups and it’s not discussed already. Just wonder, how much time is better to spend on blogging per day? I mean, in average and ideal time. If it’s me, 2 hour 🙂 for part-timer, and 6 hour for full-timer.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
And about motivation, as i said, the purpose itself is our best motivator. Approach the purpose with 2 ways :
– Hell approach : Thinking something so sad and bad which will happen if you not reach that purpose. For exampe, your purpose is money and the goal is to get $100 in a month. If you not reach it, you’ll get your family angry, your friend leave you because you’re promise to treat them something with that $100, etc….
– Heaven approach :The opposite. Think something good will happen IF ONLY you can realize your purpose. For example, if you get that $100, you can treat your friend and get them loyal, you can buy x and y, etc….
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
As far as creating a schedule goes, you should definitely be consistent when posting so that your readers get used to your schedule. If you manage to get them used to it, you won’t even have to have any kind of subscription on your blog (of course it’s always good to have it just in case) but the users will come back on their own looking for good articles. Nice post Typhoon, thanks for sharing!
.-= Gordon´s last blog ..Branding Websites And Blogs =-.
Even you can make a base of reader which loyal like that, i think subscription form still should be added (in purpose to make the subscription count is shown also). It’s needed when you want to monetize your blog since it’s become indicator of good blog/no.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@Akira. Yes showing the subscription count is important not only in monetizing but also it shows site’s worth. I chk of the subscription status before I write guest article too.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Agree, because if we’re only seeing it PR, it’s bad. It’s because so many PR achievement not pure nowadays, we can manipulate many things to get PR. It’s easy, even sometime againts a bit of google rules.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@Gordan Along with consistency its good to have the posts with same niche and not writing about all u know in various fields. It may finally get u nothing worth.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
At the moment I won’t call myself a successful blogger because I only started blogging 6 months ago, but as an aspiring successful blogger I will definitely practice all you have pointed out. Thank you Sushant.
.-= cfagbata´s last blog ..4 Steps to Starting a Small Business and to Becoming your Own Boss =-.
I think successful blogger is not always old player or the one who experienced a long time blogging time. Because i find, there is a blogger which launch the blog for 4-5 month ago but now it’s already success. If i’m allowed, i will state the name.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
@Akira Yes, there are some blogs, I have seen too. But I think one year is a good time for some part time bloggers for me to produce good results and get atleast 1 K subscribers.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
In the case, you’re part timer blogger, i can understand. Yes, 1 year can be categorized as good enough.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
@cfaqbata all the best for being a successful blogger soon. Then I am so younger than you, blogging less than three months ago. We have a long way to go. These tips can surely help us.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
Actually we can reduce our time by buying excisting blog, so we not start from zero. There is a benefit but also disadvantage by using this technique. But if we’re stick with those 7 points, i’m sure even excisting blog can bring you as professional blogger.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Agree with all point. The list is seem like a 7 pilar for a blog. Make a purpose is the first thing we should do, and some people say that the purpose should be very specific. For example :”I make this blog to make fixed earning per month at least $xxx”. Or in other word, in this case, purpose = goals. There is a long term purpose and the short one.
That specific purpose can be reached if you’re consistence to do what you’re planned on schedule.
About direction, actually there is so many alternative direction can be choosen. Consider it one by one and choose the best.
Engage the reader is clearly important. About unique and innovative, it’s based on people since we know there is a people with less creativity :P, but with exercise their can do it.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
But I don’t like people who says I setup the blog for earning money. I would like to say those people that “Be consistent in blogging and with full spirit, you will automatically get opportunities for making money”
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
I’m always agree for that statement. But it’s hard to find people like that nowadays. Even their say : Be consistent in blogging and with full spirit, you will automatically get opportunities for making money”, but i’m sure mostly of them will leave the blog if for a long time effort to build that blog (even with consistency and spirit), the blog can earn them a money.
It’s lie if people build niche blog but not for money as purpose (implisit or explicit). If their don’t want money, i’m sure their will prefer to make daily-life story blog.
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
May be yes. But its true, the rarest species always count. So finding such people is touch, once u find never leave them. They are the one who can turn coal into gold. 🙂
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..7 Questions You Should Answer Before Blogging =-.
People like that is very fit to be choosen if you want to share project or maybe making multi-author blog. Do you know who is the example?
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
Innovating can really be harmful especially when you’re doing this too much yet, you’re not sure you’re doing this properly.
Great post..
Yes, as stated above, it will make your blog messy. And don’t forget about “user-friendly” things as Typhoon advice. Make innovation and apply it to your blog if only it have meaning and useful for a reader. If not, you’ll get :
Your blog messy –> reader feel uncomfortably –> reader leave your blog –> ruin of your blog
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Make or Break – Website Review =-.
Users are our Assets Akira, so user friendly designs and good practises are very important for any blog.
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..How To Use Facebook Effectively =-.
That’s why i’m said “don’t forget” about it. Do you ever experienced innovation which make you leave a blog?
.-= akira07´s last blog ..Quick report – My Smartbloggerz Commenting Idol 2 Participation =-.
may be but I don’t remember. Once I was changing my theme’s appearance by myself and I felt like I innovated many new things but most of the people don’t like it or someone blamed it for making the page load slower. This can be an example for poor innovation 🙁
.-= Senthil Ramesh´s last blog ..7 Questions You Should Answer Before Blogging =-.
Yes sometimes in an attempt to innovate at my appearence i have messed up with my themes appearance. 🙁

I just dint note this comment. I have replied for it above. May be I have made such things lot of times. But I always love ‘Trial and error’ things. 🙂
