Theme sponsoring is getting harder and harder a people become more code savvy.
Encrypted or not, you will find MANY links being removed. Paying for this could end up very wasteful; if you purchase many, there is no way you can continually track them all.

A newbie blogger might not think at first on removing the footer links and even if he tries to, most probably the theme will not work because encryption is done in such a way that if anyone without an open mind goes on removing it then the theme will give fatal errors.
I like idea above to give comment at blog that have top comments in their blog. I will use this new knowledge to increase a lot of backlinks to my blog.

Some good suggestions here.. A good point you made about #1 – Make sure it’s a topical theme. We made the mistake of sponsoring a theme that was great looking, but it had a VERY limited audience because of the niche nature of the theme.
4+ months later, and the only backlinks that Google shows are from the demo site for the theme. 🙁

Ya, that’s a major mistake people commit while sponsoring a theme in order to build backlinks…They don’t even consider whether that theme is actually related to their niche or not..That’s why I have highlighted it as a very important thing in this article while looking to sponsor a theme.

Never heard of theme sponsoring before. I do the top commentator strategy, but I make sure to post relevant and often helpful comments. I have found that this does work, despite what some of the earlier comments suggest. On one particular blog I have found that many of the internal posts pass link juice – not just limited to the home page.

This a practical list of link building. Commentator Widget is most simplest and easy way to get backlink. And, link building through hardcoding in themes is very difficult. Atleat for me, it is.
Great post and thanks for those 3 great tips. I just learned something new today thanks to you. I more inclined to go with article marketing and maybe sponsoring a theme. Attaining the status of top commentator in a popular blog can be time consuming since everybody might be competing for that spot. I can settle for a back link from the comment section.

I have a question about theme sponsoring – where do these themes get distributed? I don’t think they can be distributed like that via the official WP theme directory. I tried hiring designers and submitting my own theme but they refused to accept a theme that had a link back to a site other than a web design site.

Right now there are 100’s of blogs/websites which collects free wordpress themes..They are specially called as wordpress themes directory.
