This is a guest post by Brandon Connell who teaches you how to make money blogging at BrandonConnell.com.
I have been a madman over the past few months, as I discussed in my recent blog post about my guest posting activities which I used to lay all of my articles on the table.
I have written a few articles about how guest posting will increase your commentary and traffic. But what I didn’t cover was how you would benefit even further by guest posting on a previously published blog.

When you first start guest posting, you are focused on building traffic, back-links, and raising your Alexa Traffic Rank. You set sail trying to get as many guest posts on as many blogs as possible. But once that round is complete, it is time to establish yourself as a reoccurring power to be reckoned with. To do this, you need to analyze which blogs brought you the most traffic, new readers, or PageRank.
Your second round of guest articles should focus on a few select blogs from your first round. This will basically remind readers of that blog who you are, and drill your brand into their minds. When someone takes notice to a good article, they may bookmark that article for further reference later down the line. But some of them will not follow the link back to the guest authors main blog.
By posting a second time around, you are hoping to attract those missed readers and turn them into loyal readers of your own blog.
Once you establish your 2nd round, it’s time to move on to the 3rd which is the big blog lottery. What I mean by this is that you want to write a few articles that are nice and long, and very high quality. You would then focus your submissions to the huge players such as ProBlogger for example. Even the big blogs publish guest posts from lesser established bloggers. It’s just a matter of making your article stand out from the rest of the hundreds of articles they receive regularly.
By the time you have started your third round of guest submissions, you will have established yourself as a quality guest author. The big guys will be able to go and check out your previous material and see if you would be a good fit for their readers. That’s why it is important to not skip out on the 1st and 2nd rounds of guest blogging.
To get going in the great quest of guesting, check out a couple of good places that are dedicated to just that.
- MyBlogGuest.com
- BloggerLinkUp.com
- My forum on my blog (guest author link above)
You can also search various forums with a blogging category such as WebProWorld. Of course, many blogs that you do a Google search for that are in your niche most likely have a guest posting page on their blog with instructions for submission. If the blog you want to guest post on is lacking a dedicated page for it, that does not mean you cannot contact them and ask.
Go through the 3-round game-plan above and you will be one of the big guys in no time.
Do you guest post and revisit?
Good tip. Yes it should not be a problem to write for the same blog again when you are getting the traffic, subscribers and loyal readers.
Thank you Imran. Yes, it is easy in that case. It is just a matter of going through the first round and taking a chance first. Then you know which blogs brought you that traffic and those other things.
A nice little guest posting strategy Brandon.
Myself, I need to start trying more guest posts. Something that really scares me is showing the author crap articles.
I totally understand the idea of returning to a blog that you have previously guest posted on, it’s a gread brand builder.
Thank you Glen. Branding is the name of the game here. This is my 2nd guest post for SmartBloggerz. Do you remember me yet? It is also important to have a unique gravatar that stands out. It is your “logo” in the blog world. Go make that time for guest posts Glen. I promise it will increase your traffic among other things.
Some people think that gaining links through guest posting is important. What they don’t realize is that linking to a website is useless. What’s important is to gain online reputation.
Otis, thanks for the comment. Linking IS important, but it is only a small ingredient in the guest posting recipe.
When you go for guest blogging, I agree that you should be posting more than once on the same blog, since otherwise people might think that you are there just to get some visitors and backlinks. This is definitely not the way to go if you are serious about what you’re doing. I still haven’t made any guest posts, but I hope to start in the next weeks, so the tips were useful. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Darrel. I hope you get started with guest posting soon. Yes, I am weary of guest posters too at first, until I see them a couple of times in the same place. That means they are community types.
That is true . Infact you need to analyze where traffic is coming and try and concentrate to do more guest posts on that blog . Infact , im planning to post one more on this blog . 😀
Hi Venkat. Thank you for the comment.
Guest posting is a powerful strategy and doing it more than once will always help because you’re showing that you’re not just there to get traffic back to your site by going in and going out but are actually trying to provide continual value on that blog as well.
Great thought here!
Thank you Eric. That is exactly right.
I want to thank you for yet another wonderful article. I am always on the look-out for great WordPress tips to recommend to my own readers. Thanks for taking the time to write this article. It’s exactly what I was looking for. Truly fantabulous post.
No problem Carol. Thank you.
Great topic. Doing a guest post on the same blog for the second time(or more) will surely increase the reputation of the guest blogger. I liked the “big blog lottery” thing, sounds pretty tough!!. Well, I haven’t done a single guest post yet, but I think I need to start it from somewhere.
I wouldn’t say it is tough Sourav. It’s just a matter of standing out. Darren from ProBlogger allows you to just send your guest post through his contact form. He only accepts a few here and there and you can imagine how many submissions he gets. Long, well structured, and informative posts are likely to stand out for the big guys.
hey brandon,
firstly, this is a great post.
Recently, I have just started blog commenting and blog posting myself . I have come into questioning whether it would be much more appropriate to stick with just a few blog posting or do I spread it amongst various blogs.
your post has provided me with an answer.
cheers and thank you
have a nice day.
Thank you for the comment, and you’re welcome for the information.
Brandon,
I think it is so important that you mentioned the fact that after you do your first round of guest posts, it’s important to go back and truly analyze which blogs brought you traffic. Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away and try to be all over the board when in actuality, once you figure out your key sites that give you tons of traffic you should just focus on those sites and build a good reputation so that you can become an official or “expert” on that one site. That will definitely lead to more traffic on your end.
It is important to really utilize those major traffic blogs. But it is also important to continue to test the waters with others as well. For example, I have guest posted here a couple of times, and on RobsWebTips. After that, I tested the waters in TechNShare. So far, all 3 have been a good traffic source for me. Continue to discover other great guest posting venues, but focus more heavily on ones that worked.
