The Importance of Testimonials for an Online Business – 4 Myths Busted

I believe that a lot of webmasters and Internet marketers who are serious about promoting products or services don’t take testimonials seriously. Many of them feel as if other people don’t take testimonials seriously either. There are a multitude of reasons for this, and a few of them are as follows…

  • They believe people don’t believe the testimonials anymore
  • They believe testimonials can be easily faked
  • They believe testimonials are usually solicited
  • And they believe testimonials have no real value to their business

I can understand this, but something you must understand is that in this world anyone who is looking to spend money on a product or service will want to have their fears and doubts eased. People will look for anything they can to feel better and confident about the product or service they see offered from a given website or Internet marketer.

There are other myths that Internet marketers and webmasters have about testimonials and their importance. In this article I’m going to destroy a few of those myths.

Myth #1. Online Testimonials Don’t Help To Get Your Business Credibility.

Online testimonials do exactly the opposite, they give you a lot of credibility and they help to speed up the process of you getting conversions. Initially people are going to be skeptical about purchasing any product or service from you. When people see that others have bought services and products from you successfully, and not only this, they were satisfied with them, then people will have a much easier time trusting you.

Myth #2. Testimonials Don’t Get Rid Of The Fears Customers Have.

I believe a lot of Internet marketers and webmasters believe that potential customers still have fears, and many of them believe this because they know testimonials can be faked sometimes.

But no online business that is truly serious will risk their reputations by giving false testimonials. For the most part a visitor knows that if a business is truly serious and doesn’t want to hurt their credibility, then they will include real testimonials. These testimonials will work wonders to get rid of some of the nagging doubts a possible customer might have.

Myth #3. Some Marketers Believe That Testimonials Don’t Help To Increase Conversions All That Much For A Product Or Service.

If you believe this is true, then chances are you probably aren’t making all that much money in the first place.

Anybody who is looking to spend a serious amount of money or even a small amount of money online wants to see testimonials from other people. Even if there are not testimonials on your website directly, they may still go elsewhere to see what other people are saying about you before they purchase.

The more positive testimonials you have, whether they be on your website or someone else’s, they are definitely going to help conversions in the long run.

Myth #4. You Are Not Able To Enhance Your Business As A Result Of Testimonials So Why Bother With Them.

Some Internet marketers and webmasters believe that having testimonials will not help them to see what they can change about their product or service to make it better. They believe that paying attention to what others are saying won’t help their bottom line. You must remember, other people will offer recommendations as to what they want.

Whenever you see a trend developing, it will serve you well to consider changing how you do things. Your number one priority should always be the satisfaction and opinions of your customers. If they see you are willing to go out of your way to accommodate them, they will remember you and give you their business. What’s even better is they will probably purchase more expensive products and services from you in the future.

Final Words

I hope that by clearing up some of the myths or false notions you have about the importance of testimonials for an online business you will change the way you think.

By understanding the importance of testimonials you will help your credibility online, you will calm the fears of your customers concerning doing business with you, you’ll increase your website conversions in the long run, and you will make your products and services better in the future by paying attention to the suggestions of customers.

  1. Fantastic post. Testimonials are without doubt the best form of “social proof”.

I always think of it like this. The line “if operators are busy, please try again” is meant to encourage people to buy because they think other people are doing it.

If that works, how much better is “I, a named person, explicitly recommend this service”?

  2. Hi Sushant

This is so on topic for me. I just published a post where I share my first product review. I have also just opened my first store at Etsy so I have actually asked if people would like to send testimonials when they have tried the products I have on offer.

I definitely think testimonials hold a lot of weight as it shows that customers trust your service and like the products. Also they can comment on my blog about them too so that gives added weight. Thanks for sharing.

But you succeed on your post, all of my doubts are destroyed and I am encouraged. Now I am the one who’ll use testimonials on my sites. Cheers!

  6. I believe testimonials hold a lot of weight for every business but a lot of people is holding back because of the myths you wrote above. Hope this articles can clear the myths.

  7. If you are providing an online service then testimonials are must, and it should also look like a genuine testimonial. Most of the times adding a designation of the person and a direct link to their website with their testimonial can make it look like a real testimonial. So that would help, and more testimonial from well known blog owners can help you get more members. So that point should be added too.

  8. testimonials give a sense of godwill that the previous clicnet has left for the worker …. i think its a good thing for freelancers

  9. I also believe it has to do with the type of product or service is being promoted and/or sold. The Internet world is a little difficult because with virtual products especially, the product cannot be seen or touched until the purchase is made, which is one of the reasons why people hesitate before they buy. Testimonials cannot erase that fear completely in my opinion, but I think that for some people they will help get them past the hesitation.

  10. Testimonials on sites are really important. But for those who doesn’t really understand the business they think its fraud. Well, there are right ways on making this. Thanks for the post.
