4 Monumental SEO Tips For Improving Your Search Rankings

Every website owner wants to be number one in Google; chances are, so do you. But it can be difficult to get high rankings due to the sheer amount of competition on the web.

You could easily spend thousands of dollars on SEO companies to gain high rankings or, if you’re willing to put some effort into it, use these four monumental tips to dominate your competition with search engine optimization.

1. Target Longer Keyword Phrases

Single keyword phrases are almost impossible to rank for because of the money and effort others have already spent toward ranking for these terms.

Although single keywords get the lions share of search engine traffic, the relevancy of searches are actually quite low.

Web users will begin their search with a generic term until they specify what they are looking for with a long-tail keyword. To get that top ranking in Google (and capture relevant traffic that’s ready to buy, subscribe and share), target long-tail keywords.

Although there are less searches, they are easier to rank for with a minimal amount of effort. Keep researching and going after these long-tail keywords and soon your website will be generating the same amount of traffic as the single terms.

2. Use a Keyword Rich Domain

When building a niche site or one that is very relevant to a topic you plan to write, sell or build a community around, using the keywords within the URL is quickly becoming a deciding factor for search engine optimization.

As Google and other search engines visit your site, right away the search engines understand what the topic of the website is about due to its keyword URL.

Build your website with your main keyword in mind for the URL, continue to use this keyword and its secondary terms throughout your website and soon you’ll have a top ranked website in search engines.

3. Build Backlinks

Building backlinks can take some time but the more effort you place in link building, the greater results you’ll have in search engines.

For example:

If Website A has just two backlinks and ranks well, you know that if you can build many more backlinks to your website, you will soon outrank your competitor.

Build backlinks should be apart of every search engine optimization campaign – enough to say that it should be one of the main elements to strive for when going for the number one spot in Google.

4. Optimize Your Content for Search Engines

Within every part of your website, use your main and secondary keywords as part of your content.

When Google crawls your website, the search engine spiders will be looking for keywords to help it decide which terms you are trying to rank for.

Search engine friendly titles, tags, content and interlinking are just a few of the main elements of optimizing your content for search engines.

A website with SEO-friendly content will have a much easier time ranking number one in Google over competitors that use their keywords sparingly.

Conclusion

Use these four monumental search engine optimization tips as part of your daily campaign will make your website rise within Google search results until you’ve peaked at the glorious number one spot.

Make it part of your effort every day to continually optimize, build links and target your keywords; these are what will get you massive traffic, these are what gives you that number one spot in Google.

  3. backlinks baclinks and more baclinks . once you get to top position , then automatic links comes flowing in ,as people start talking about ur site

    1. Yes, that’s a smart technique but that will only happen if your brand name and the person who own it gets recognized very well (not just by being on top position on Google) and it only happens in some niche.

      Thanks for your comment Sourish.

  4. the 2nd tip is absolutely essential , i always notice everybody is giving importance to keywords and i do agree !! 🙂 very helpful 4 tips ! thank You

    1. that keyword you are targeting must be evenly spread throughout the site , so that looks normal and not that you are stuffing ….

    2. Keyword rich domain helps a lot! It is easy to find a keyword rich domain for very small niche that hasn’t been explored much but almost all the domains looks like to have been taken for big and high search keywords. But still there are many golden and hidden keywords that still needs to get hunted. So go on for hunting and you may find it.

  5. It is really fundamental. I just would like to add that you should target at least 50-75 different keywords in order to get decent traffic and eventually rankings. Besides, you need to build activity on your website, if you want to get it ranked high. That is why blogging is so popular right now.

    1. Right Peter. Targeting various related keyword and building backlinks for it makes it easier for search engine to understand what you really want to achieve. For example, if you are having a “shoes” blog. Then you should not just focus on building links for one or two keywords. Try building as much links for related keyword like “womens shoes”, “mens shoes”, “winter shoes”, winter shoes for womens”, “running shoes”, “running shoes for womens” etc. All this related keywords brings in a great improvement in search rankings.

      Thanks for commenting Peter…

  6. These are really monumental tips! Also try bookmarking your posts on well-ranking sites like twitter, facebook, digg and many others. And as you’ve mentioned, if those single keywords are already taken by the big boys then you always still have a chance by using long tail keywords.

    1. Bookmarking or Posting updates of your posts on Twitter and Facebook doesn’t helps in search ranking improvement. But these updates can rank well on Google Social search to bring traffic and also in the search results of those respected sites.

  7. The future is without a doubt in long keyword phrases. These days getting ranked for terms such as SEO and blogging is pretty much impossible, since the leaders in those niches have dominated those words. There’s just no way for small businesses to compete. Still with a bit of research you can find some great keyphrases that both have a lot of monthly searches and comparatively low competition rates. As for the other paragraphs – I totally agree. Optimizing your content and building backlinks is a never-ending task.

    1. But it is not “really impossible” to rank for keyword like “blogging” or “seo”. If you can manage something BIG and have funds already in your pocket to go onto that mission then it is possible to achieve first page rankings for those BIG daddy keywords.

      Thanks for your comment Daniel…

  8. If I rank these tips from the hardest to the easiest, I think the hardest would be using a keyword rich domain. I have tried so many tools just to make a domain with a keyword on it. Lot’s of internet marketers already hold these domains and what we can do now is to mix it up with other words or make it a longtail keyword. Also, it’s opposite to branding.

Next would be targeting longtail keyword phrases, this might be a bit hard specially for starters as longtail keywords are now slowly dominated by lots of internet marketers. For me this can be real hard too as you have to be on the right grammar and mixing it up with some words or jumbling the words would be too stupid (sorry for the word). People would search “make money blogging” but not “blogging money make”.

Next would be optimizing content and backlink building. This is really fun, comments, forums, guest posts, building relationships and traffic.

    Anyway, nice tips Typhoon.

    1. There is no end to getting long tail keywords. Just taking your example. If you think that you can’t achieve ranking for “make money blogging” then why not go for a more long tail keyword with slightly less search impression related to it with lesser competition than it; which is “make money blogging for beginners”. If you will search for it on Google you will see great difference in search results except the dominating result on top of Darren Rowse blog.

  9. Sushant,

Thanks for this tips! I guess i use most of the tips.

I am visiting your blog after long time.

I think you remember me (iPod won) 🙂

  10. Great tips. a must to apply.

I reckon my posts which i wrote naturally also can rank high.

Also, according to my blog’s niche, when i promote my links everywhere, people think i am spamming, so i mostly do not promote my posts, except bookmark them once a week, and commenting do follow blogs.

I notice my visitors who find my posts useful post my links in some forums, even also in css-tricks.com forum, i am so happy LOL.

    Thanks for your tips.

    1. I think people usually think you are spamming when you post your link starting new threads at forums..Am I right?

That happens to many people because people while on forums think differently (sometimes I feel they are jealous of something). You need to develop some art that will not make your promotion look a spam. I think that can be done by creating a conversation environment by asking people question to reply in that thread only. Never ask them to leave comment on your blog as it will directly classify you in spamming (promoting).

Hope that helps. And thanks for your comment Kimi…
