This is a guest post by Todd Dowell from ToddDowell.com where he teaches readers how to make money online. In the following post, you are going to discover his method that helped him quickly build a highly targeted subscribers list in just 4 months.
I didn’t know a lot about blogging when I started 8 months ago. I started blogging to find more customers, and share some of the tips I came across on how to make money online.
I didn’t know a lick about seo, or how to get readers to my blog to actually read my content.

How to Gain Access to the Top Dog’s Email List
As of January, 1st of this year I decided that I was going to take blogging serious. Over the past 4 months I developed a strategy that allowed me to legally gain access to some of the top guru’s email lists.
I knew that many of the top guru’s with huge list like to blast their email list with several new affiliate offers every week.
Immediately, I understood what I needed to do next to get myself in front of all these people on the top dogs lists.
Here is the exact process that enabled me to cash in on the targeted subscribers in my niche:
- Product Creation – Some big name guru’s create a product, and contact all their jv partners from previous launches.
- Top Dogs Create Curiosity – The Top dogs with huge list begin to send emails promoting one of their jv partners products. Most of these guru’s have thousands of people sitting on their list. These people on their list are highly targeted, and repeat customers from their own product launches.
- Product Reviews – It takes a person 6 to 7 exposures on average before there convinced to buy something. Posting a product review is a great way of drawing in the top dogs list. Once a guru sends an email about xyz product to the people on their list. They usually go to google, and type in “xyz review” to get more information, testimonials… etc.
This is where you can capture their emails, and in most cases make a few dollars in commissions.
So, How Did I Capture 600 Targeted Subscribers In 4 Months?
I studied products in my niche that were creating a buzz on the Internet. Next I create an e-book composed of several tips I came across that gave real answers to common questions within my niche. I used a free program called open office to create a .pdf file, so it could be downloaded easily.
All I need next was a professional looking aweber popup that would only show when new visitors appeared on my blog. Luckily there was actually a wordpress plugin called “Popup Domination” by Michael Dunlop, which displays professional looking popup’s.
I quickly setup a series of emails in my autoresponder that both delivered my free e-book, and promoted blog post on my blog for repeat traffic. After my popup, and my aweber autoresponder were properly setup on my blog. I was finally done, and ready to start capitalizing on the top dogs list.
That’s all I did to build a list of over 600 subscribers from blogging.

How To Build Trust With Your List When You Are nobody
There is nothing more infuriating then to have a trusted top guru send you to a sales page that explains nothing about the product. This type of sales pages are more commonly recognized in the “make money online” niche, and is called blind marketing.
Cultivate your list by giving them loads of free high quality content that solves your readers problems.
You can do this by sending an email to your list every time you publish a blog post, or have some helpful information to share. Never try to get them to buy something on the first email you send to your list because it’s a sure way to get unsubscriptions.
Once the people on your list continually benefit from the tips on your blog, or content you have shared with them. You will be beginning to build trust with your list. I feel this is the best way to start to become an expert in the eyes of your subscribers.
Conclusion
Using this technique of building subscribers for your blog is good for building a responsive list. Nobody wants to feel like they are being cheated.
Giving away free tips, and content to your list will always open up more doors, then cramming the latest product down your subscribers throats. I’m a firm believer that if you treat your people good, then they will be more than willing to help you when you need it.
Once your list builds to a certain level, this is when you see good things to happen because you can offer products to them and maybe make a little money.
“Black Seo Guy “Signing Off”
Yes Antonio that is exactly the point!
That’s it! But you better not emphasize on the product you offer (that was my mistake in the past). Everything I got were unscriptions.. Probably because people are sick and tired of ads.. I changed my strategy, wrote about the pros of my products and got positive results! Good luck everyone 😉
An Interesting strategy indeed: following the lead of the “gurus”. Really smart.
Thanks for sharing this.
Wow! What a great and smart strategy!
I’ve never thought of building an email list using this technique before and it’s something I might be trying in the nearest future.
Thanks so much for the great post!

I discoved this technique by accident, but it works very well. Email marketing is a traffic source that has been around for a long time, and at this point it’s not going anywhere no time soon.
Thanks for the comment Onibalusi
Although this technique was found by an accident it has a GREAT positive impact! That is very interesting. Todd, you act like wise people do: first they look and see how it works, and then they apply the techniques.
Blogging for me, means saying your thoughts and what you can for others to be successful as well. You shared your knowledge and just look at where you are now and how much you are earning. I’ve learned a lot from your post. Thanks!
This is a really interesting way to look and list building. I like the last point you make about providing good content and not trying to shove things down peoples throats. I have learned that it always first and foremost to help people and provide real value and then the sales will come. It’s like internet marketing karma! 🙂
I agree with Danielle… the first goal is to gain their trust and establish connection. Selling immediately is such an abrupt approach.
Yeah, right now I’m trying to work on my email marketing. I’ve always focused on Adsense as my online source of income, but now I’m trying to branch out into this new field. And all I can say is “THANKS TOD”, I’ll be sure to give you guys an update on how it’s going after using these methods.
I’ve never been a big fan of Popup Domination, but it does seem to work for folks, so I might give it a try.
Yeah, this is the best method to get ongoing targeted subscribers Preventing from being marked as spam. Most of the marketers usually starts blasting their readers with affliate offers immediately after they subscribe. That is where they get wrong and get blacklisted.
Well, your posts uncovered many strategies. Thanks for sharing it here.
Pop-up domination sounds real great, however the price is there. Are there any free alternatives by the way ?
There are some “free” one’s out there but they are not good in features.
So .. basically, what are some of them?
If you are using aweber, then it offer a free optin-popup.
Then there is one free plugin called “Optin Pop Up”. They also have a paid advanced version with more features. So basically the free one is like really restricted in what you can benefit from an optin-popup. For more, Google is your friend.
Hi Todd,
Great article and a great strategy to gain subscribers to your list. I haven’t started list building till now but I am thinking of doing so pretty soon. I think you are correct when you said not to promote your sales page in the first mail itself since it may lead people to stop trusting you.

Shiva
