Here are a few methods you can use to increase your website traffic…

1. Optimize Your Website

If you already have a decent site up and running but you are not getting any traffic, the first thing you can try is to rank in the SERPs. Start off with some keyword research, find a decently searched keyword with moderate competition and optimize your site for that particular keyword.

After you are finished with the on-page optimization, try your hands on some link building. Increase the number of inbound links to your website, submit to authoritative directories, write some articles on your field of expertise and submit them to popular article directories, get active on popular forums in your niche, leave out useful comments on related popular blogs, exchange a few links with trusted sites related to your niche and see if you can rank within the top 10 for your targeted keyword.

NOTE: Ranking in the SERPs takes time, it can be 3-6 or even 12 months, depending on the level of competition and the aggressiveness of your link building campaign, so be patient.

2. Start Blogging

It is possible that you get some traffic, but you are stuck without any growth due to low amount of traffic. If that is the case, start a blog and start writing. Don’t be afraid to spill out a few secrets, let your visitors know the level of expertise you have in your niche. Try to hold your current traffic by blogging about what your users require, this will help them bring more traffic to your site by referring you to their friends and family.

Post about something your users would want to read, ask yourself a few questions like “What answers could I be looking for as a visitor”, and try to answer them in your blog post. Keep your style of writing professional, to the point, yet enjoyable to read.

3. Get Active On Social Media sites

Register your company profile on sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. These sites are now seen more as a brand management tool than anything else. Due to the authority of these sites, you have a good chance of ranking for your company name with your profile on these sites. You can also use your keywords here to have a better chance of ranking in the SERPs with these profiles.

Provide a direct link on your homepage to your social profiles so that your visitors can follow you there. Engage your visitors, let them know about you, your company, upcoming products, events, news and changes in your niche. Promote your blog posts on your social media profiles. Communicating via social media gets you a great opportunity in converting your visitors into real-time customers.

4. Guest Blogging On Popular Sites

Try to find out blogs within your niche that accept guest posts, write an informative post for them in return for a link to your website. This way, you not only get traffic but also free inbound links. The real plus point of this is that if your posts gets published on popular blogs people treat you as an authority in your area of expertise.

5. Give Something Out For Free

Give out something for free, it can be anything from a free coupon, product, service or advice. Just don’t be afraid of giving things out for free occasionally, because this will bring more people to your site, everyone loves the idea of something being free so it will result in more and more amount of traffic. The people you give out to free will refer you to their friends and family. You can ask them to write a review on their site about your products or services; they will be happy to help.

NOTE: You do get traffic from giving out things for free but its upto you to hold on to this traffic.

6. Build A PPC Campaign

All of the mentioned above can take you some time to get traffic, but if you are looking for traffic instantly sign up with popular Pay Per Click programs with popular search engines like Google for Google AdWords, Yahoo Sitematch or even with Facebook. It only takes a few minutes to set up a PPC campaign with these services and you will start getting traffic immediately but remember your site needs to be good enough to convert this traffic into sales, so make sure that you are ready to receive the traffic.

CONCLUSION

For people to appreciate you, you need to build something so useful that you are able to hold onto whatever traffic you recieve. So first make your site so useful that those once visit you come back to you for more.

  1. Getting traffic to your site is certainly the biggest question and problem for webmasters but there are so many ways to get traffic these days and not only from search engines.

Social media is a great way to get traffic and sometimes this traffic converts better than search engines traffic.

Networking with other blogs on your niche can make wonders to attract new visitors and this can happen in many ways (guest blogging is the most effective).

Another way is video marketing and if your videos go viral you can expect a tone of traffic coming to your site…

  2. Hi,

I just developed a mini course myself to give for free. I hope it was worth the effort. Dipped once in to PPC and it did not bring anything but junk traffic. I do need to get on the guest blogging train soon!

    1. Hi Nik,

Thanks for the reply, I really don’t know details of your PPC campaign but PPC has its own art and it might seem easy just giving money to get traffic but it always isn’t. If you do not carry out the PPC campaign properly you can lose a lot of money, because in the end its all about conversions and if that traffic doesn’t convert into customers then surely it is junk.

But as I said, PPC is an art in itself. So it requires you to master it first before you can have any benefits from it.

  3. I’ve been working on bringing some traffic to my new blog, I use some advice here. In particular the “give away free stuff”. My blog gives out Free WordPress themes…

  4. Good tips, especially the one regarding a contest (or offering something free). Today when most people are trying to make more money online without spending that much, offering them something free is like giving a kid milk and cookies.

  5. With the new Google “fresher” update having a thing like a blog as part of your website will become even more important. Timely information matters and will be rewarded more and more as Googles algorithm gets smarter.

  6. Getting active in social networking sites and Optimizing the website are two of the most important things that a site owner must consider. Yet, these two can be very tedious at times. Anyway, if things are done correctly, achieving positive result is highly possible.

  7. Hi Akash,
I have used some of your suggestions before in trying to drive traffic. I’m not ready for PPC yet as I will stick with free traffic. Obviously, Google is putting more emphasis on social networking so I have been doing some linkbuilding with Linked In Groups. It works pretty well. However, content is still king.
    Thanks,
    Jim

    1. Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comment. I would really like to know more about your link building strategy with the LinkedIn Groups. Aren’t the links from LinkedIn redirected?

  8. Would like to add..
Commenting is a simple and essential tool to increase your blog’s traffic.
    1. respond to comments left on your blog to show your readers that you value their opinions and draw them into a two-way conversation. This will increase reader loyalty.

    2. leave comments on other blogs to drive new traffic. Make sure you leave your blog’s URL in your comment, so you create a link back to your own blog. Many people will read the comments left on a blog post. If they read a particularly interesting comment, they are highly likely to click on the link to visit the commentor’s website.

It’s important to make sure you leave meaningful comments that are likely to invite people to click on your link to read more. Why not click on this url 😉 he he

  9. I agree that a PPC campaign can bring traffic right away. This is also a great want to test if a certain market is right for you. And I agree you had better make sure you have a good conversion page before starting a PPC campaign. Thanks for the info Akash.
