Writing has always been a huge part of my life, so when I enrolled in an English program at my state college as an undergraduate no one was really surprised.

While English courses helped me perfect my grammar and understand the various works of Shakespeare, my English courses didn’t specifically prepare me for blogging.

No, the skills I learned that made me a self-proclaimed blogger extraordinaire naturally occurred while I worked as a part-time journalist for the student newspaper. To find out what lessons I learned from the news room that can help boost your blogging career, continue reading below.

The internet offers a world of opportunity for anyone looking to get out of the 9-5 daily rut and build a dream lifestyle of passive income. Truth be told, internet is possibly the only medium that can make the dream of real passive financial freedom truly possible. However, there is often an element of misguided confidence with how fast anyone can start making a full-time income online.

Many people are sold the dream lifestyle through expensive “get rich quick” training products, promised fancy cars, beaches and mega mansions. This often turns aspiring entrepreneurs into what you can describe as “opportunity seekers” and the number one reason a staggering 95% of the people fail to build the coveted dream lifestyle they always thought was possible.

So, why is it that there is such a high failure rate with people looking to make a living online, after all there has to be some element of truth to how all those online “gurus”, driving fancy cars got to be where they are.

Anyone who’s spent anytime blogging can readily relate to tales of bad SEO. Blog comments that hardly seem to be English, guest post request spam, and a constant stream of content solely designed to build backlinks.

And it’s unfortunate. Because I believe link building, done properly, is more about personal human interaction than anything to do with a search engine—crazy, right? Let me explain.

First you need to understand the reason most people start a blog, is because they’re passionate about something. They want to share their passion with the world. But, maintaining a blog is a lot of work. Often for little or no money.

So, some blogs start looking for content contribution from outside sources, such as guest posts. Or maybe they are just looking to build more of a community. Either way, they want their blog to stay passionate, on point, and high quality. Generically written, bland, vanilla posts written only for a backlink is the last thing they want.

One of the biggest problems I see with people who are just starting their blog or have big plans to get rich from blogging, is that they don’t create a strategic plan before they get started. The biggest misconception about blogging is that it’s easy to make money and build an established site of your own.

Anyone can buy a domain, choose a web host and throw up a WordPress driven site. Anyone can also start writing great content and posting once or twice a week. Even after a few months and having written 20-30 original articles, you are still basically without a business model and plan. Blogging is one of the slowest forms of making money online and if you don’t have a plan in place, you may never end up making money at all.
